Application Question

Hi guys!!

I am very interested in attending Northwestern, it is currently my first choice. I plan to double major in theatre and psychology in college.

I have a couple of questions about Northwestern:

What is it like to double major at Northwestern? Are some majors just incompatible with each other in terms of scheduling and coursework?

For applying to the theatre program, do you need to submit a resume? How important is the resume?

The interview. The website says not having an interview won’t count against you. It seems like the kind of thing that could hurt you more than harm you. What are the pros and cons?

I would really appreciate it if anyone could share their knowledge!! Thanks :)

Sorry - just saw this!

1) The main thing I’ve heard is that it’s tricky to double major in any capped program that you are not specifically admitted to. For example, someone who is not admitted specifically as a Theatre major will likely be unable to double major in Theatre. I think the same may be true with Journalism and Music, but I suspect there are exceptions. If you are interested in a specific double major, you could call someone in Admissions and see if it sounds possible. D knows many Theatre kids doing double majors, and even a few doing triple majors, in a very wide variety of subjects. Keep in mind that most kids admitted to NU arrive with a lot of AP credits, which simplifies double majors. I’d think that Theatre and Psych should be no problem.

2) Last year D was told to submit a resume and headshot after her application was complete, but we heard of kids this year who weren’t, so it may be optional. We were told that the initial screening is based on academic stats, so it probably helps a lot if you are among the 50 most academically qualified candidates of your sex (since they try for a 50/50 M/F split) and have amazing essays and recommendations. It did seem that kids with professional credits and/or national awards were more likely to be admitted than those with only credits from school, but no one outside of Admissions knows everything about how the process works.

3) D did have a local interview, which she really enjoyed, but I have no idea if it helped. She had a friend with similar stats who also had a great interview but was rejected, so who knows what makes the difference. I do know that last year’s interview slots filled very quickly, so once you apply request a slot ASAP if you want one.

If you love Theatre and you love Northwestern, you might consider their summer program (affectionately called Cherubs). D did MPulse at UMich, but some friends from MPulse did both and they LOVED Cherubs and applied ED to NU.

Enjoy high school!!
