Application Themes with ECs?

Hey guys, I started this thread to get something straightened out once in for all. There are two sides to this question I have about college applications as a whole:

In your college app, it's good to show depth and interest into one or two subjects rather than take part in a many subjects. For example, if you are interested and business and economics, you should not venture into other subjects in your ECs, such as Science Bowl or an engineering internship.

As long as you show depth and interest into one main subject, it is ok to venture into other subjects. Ex: You are economics/business orientated but decide to take Science Bowl.

Which one seems more plausible? I have always been under the influence of View (1), and my area of interest is Business/Econ/Accounting. However, I have been offered to join the Science Bowl my senior year (and I need the national recognition thing). Would colleges look down at this seemingly random science portion of my business-themed application, or could I make it an asset somehow? Thanks.

Oh, god.

If you want to do science bowl, do science bowl. Why must everything be about getting into Harvard?

DO WHAT YOU LOVE! That’ll shine through to the adcoms. Don’t worry about focusing on one area. Colleges look for diversity–that can include being well rounded or having “sharp edges.”

Real people can have interests in various areas that don’t fit into one or two “themes.” In choosing what ECs to do, you should be thinking in terms of not themes but interests. Simply, what are you interested in? Relatedly, what are you good at? You can think of themes later, when you are writing the application and need to conside rhow to present your ECs.

what business/economics ecs did you do

Collegehappy is right; your themes will showcase themselves at application time.
