I recently got a paper accepted into a Journal.. which means It's not showing on my Yale EA application. Should I send them an update letting them know the details? Or would they find it annoying?

Also, say I get deferred. Am I allowed to send an application update afterwards? I tweaked my common app a little, and I think I'd have a stronger supplemental essay now that I've applied other places and have written more essays.

If you’re deferred, you can definitely send an update with things that have changed (e.g. the paper). I’m not sure about amending essays or the Common App, however.

What about my situation now? Would sending an update today not be appropriate? Having a paper published in a medical journal a huge accomplishment, but I don’t want to come across as annoying in any way.

It’s kind of late in the EA process, but you could fax the notification about your journal publication to the Yale Admissions Office. (Don’t bother updating the essay.) The fax number is: 203-777-6120.

The Yale admissions website contains the information regarding submission of academic work in their supplemental information section. [Goggle: supplemental information Yale admission] According to that section you “may submit a research abstract or a full paper for review by a member of Yale’s science faculty.” The section notes that the information should be attached in the supplemental section of the common app or it should be mailed to the Admissions office. In addition, it suggests that an additional recommendation should be sent by your mentor detailing the role you had in the research.

For the research article that my DD is a co-author on, she attached the full paper as a CA supplement with a note that it was submitted for publication in [peer reviewed medical journal]. One of her recommendations was going to quote the mentor’s information regarding DD’s research role. DD won’t bother with a publication status update to the adcom given the short time frame.

Thanks guys! That’s what I thought about the essays. It’s no big deal. I just wanted to double check.

I don’t think I’ll send it to them. I already mentioned that it was submitted, so I don’t think there is a need to tell them that it was accepted.
