Some applications I've been filling out ask if my parents are divorced, and ask for the date they were divorced. Does my parents' marital status actually have any bearing on the colleges' admission decisions?

I'd imagine that if your grades slipped within a certain period before and after (esp. during) the divorce, it would explain it well, not to mention the potential financial + family difficulties of sending a kid of divorced parents to school.

but if they were divorced back in 1995, does it affect my application now?

If the college is "need-blind", then a divorce should have no bearing on admissions decisions. One has to wonder, however, if those admissions decisions are really made on a "need-blind" basis, esp when asking the occupations of parents, marital status, etc.
