Applications to University of California by International students have fallen

New article in S.F. Chronicle this morning that applications to University of California by international students have fallen for the first time in 12 years. The article goes on to mention that the applicants are at the undergraduate level.Price might be one factor- UC just increased OOS tuition to $41,964. The other reason the article mentioned could be Trump.

And applications to Canadian universities are way up. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/03/20/canadian-universities-post-large-gains-international-applications

Also the UCs no longer give a nickel of need based aid to OOS students. This could add to the issue for international students as well.

UC also limiting OOS enrollments

Here is the article that the OP is presumably referring to:

http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/UC-sees-1st-drop-in-international-applicants-in-11043891.php

However, it does not mention what change there was in California resident and domestic non-resident applicants there was, in order to make a comparison with the change in international applicants.

Looks like the frosh application numbers are at http://www.ucop.edu/institutional-research-academic-planning/content-analysis/ug-admissions/student-workforce-pages/2017-applications.html .

Frosh applicant number change from 2016 to 2017:
California residents: +6.1%
Domestic non-residents: -2.6%
International: -0.8%

Transfer applicant number change from 2016 to 2017:
California residents: -4.1%
Domestic non-residents: -14.2%
International: -2.2%

@thumper1: Though I thought that has been true for years now, so shouldn’t explain a YoY change.

@PurpleTitan The UC’s “phased out” OOS aid in the 2016-2017 school year. It was never “good”, but the possibility of financial aid would have been enough to have some impact on OOS applications.
