New law was just past making transferring easier, and supposedly giving CC students who have their AA’s priority admissions to CSUs.

The new law will actually make it more difficult to get into your 1st choice CSU. The way it admission is determined is through location. If you apply to a csu closest to your current residence you will be accepted. For example, If you live near Csu LA that will be the school that accepts you. It will be more difficult to get into a school because transferring locals get first priority.

Zoeyturtle - do you know whether the ‘closest CSU’ refers to an applicant’s home, or the closest CSU to the CC they are attending? My daughter attends Fullerton College, but lives in Riverside. Would this law give her admission to CSU Fullerton or to whichever CSU is closest to her home in Riverside? (Which is the CSU closest to Riverside - anyone know?)
What if the closest CSU doesn’t offer her desired major? Thanks for the help!

What is confusing is that the majority of schools have already been giving priority to students in their service area. Cal Poly Pomona in particular was admitting a MUCH lower GPA average from students who attended their local CC’s. Some of the articles about this new law bring up the subject of being “gauranteed” admission to their local CSU:

“The law, which goes into effect with the 2011-2012 academic year, won’t guarantee a student admission for specified majors or campuses, but would require the California State University to grant a student priority admission to his or her local California State University campus and to a program or major that is similar to his or her community college major or area of emphasis, a summary of the bill said.”

This is a very new law and even CSU admissions workers have admitted they are not sure how this will come into play yet. It will be really interesting to get clarification on this, especially since its almost time to pick out spring classes!

Cal Poly Pomona has two local Community Colleges (CC), Mount San Antoino (Mt. Sac) and Citrus College. If the applicant is applying from one of those two colleges to an impacted major, he/she is added points to the formula.

It’s the closest CSU to her home address. Since your daughter lives in Riverside, Cal State San Bernardino is her local serving CSU. I’m pretty sure she’d have preferred Cal State Fullerton.

I’m really worried, will I have a chance in getting into this school?

Did anyone take the group tour this past saturday?
I went on Friday instead and was really impressed with the campus. The majority of the buildings looked brand new and the grounds were so green and beautiful. Its surrounded by big sycamore trees and pastures. Im not sure how it would be to live there as a freshman, but the dorms were gorgeous and the students we saw looked very happy. As opposed to our self-tour of Long Beach, I actually felt really excited at the prospect of attending here after walking around.

I did. It was very cool, there were a ton of people because there was a pumpkin patch and a 5k race on campus. Very top-notch facilities. Cal Poly Pomona’s campus is more appealing than UC Davis. I loved the suites… if I end up going there, that’s where I’ll live. The engineering buildings are immaculate. I got to see some of the engineering labs and had the opportunity to chat with some engineering students. Very competitive and motivated crowd. Same as me!

My grandparents live in Davis, and I think as far as things to do, that city has Pomona beat. However, I agree with you that everything was top-notch at CPP! I loved how you felt like you were in nature even though Pomona is such a big city. We hiked up to the Kellog Mansion (There is an old stone path that leads through his tropical backyard, by the archway that says ecological center, or something similar) and poked around the estate.

It was so tempting to buy things at the bookstore but I refrained. Last thing I want to do is get my hopes up! Their dorms look brand new, but I have a huge dog and will be living off campus. I want to find a place close to the campus so that I can ride my bike. Their farm store, which had a nursery and produce, was also very cute.

I found an article written this spring about gpa cutoffs and admissions criteria for Fullerton and CSULA. It was just a little interview with some admissions people but it said that CPP “does not think it will admit anyone with less than a 3.0”. It was written March 2010 so I am assuming this relates to Fall’11 admissions. Obviously the impacted majors are more challenging to get into, but I thought this would be helpful for those curious about the cutoff.

I really like the suites too. Two weeks ago I was hanging out inside one of them with some people that live there. It was the one with 4 rooms and 2 bathrooms.
