The thing that attracts me to UC Davis is that it offers Applied Math. How prestigious and how academically rigorous is UCD’s AppMath compared to AppMath at Ivies/higher UCs?
And just in general what are some things you really like about UC Davis and if you had a choice, why did you pick it over other schools?

I’m in a position where I’m in a very, very rigorous private school in the Bay Area and my grades are meh(3.3 UW), but course rigor is pretty up there, I have 2100~ SAT, focused EC’s(handful of advanced college level CS courses among other things)/interesting community service, English-second language, and have good rec’s and good essay lined up. I’m looking at Claremont McKenna, NYU, Tufts, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, apply to Amherst, Williams, Wellesley, etc as kids from my school have a relatively low acceptance GPA into these top LACs.

I’m currently a freshman applied math major, so I can’t tell you too much about the program yet (I’ve only taken the introductory calculus series so far.) In terms of research, there are a lot of opportunities; you can see a list of the professors working on research here. Also, as an applied math major, you could potentially do research in physics, biology, computer science, economics, etc. with the right supplementary courses. In terms of the undergraduate education, I would assume that a math major at any highly respected University would be about the same. You will probably get smaller class sizes at a private college, which may fit your learning style better.

I chose UC Davis over UCSD, UCI, and UCSB, but I was undeclared when I was deciding. I chose UC Davis because of the college town feel, the school spirit, the green campus, and the bike-friendly environment. Given my options, I’m really glad I came to UC Davis; I think it was the best fit for me. After having gone to UC Davis for two quarters, the only UC I think I would enjoy more (or even as much) is UCLA; otherwise, I really like it here and would recommend it.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. I haven’t started research or upper division coursework yet, so I can’t give too much insight into the applied math program. Good luck with your decision!
