Apply to Ivy and other biggies? :/

Hey I am from India, I have a SAT score of 1990, and a SAT Subject score of 2380 Math 2: 790 Chemistry: 800 and Physics:790, all in one sitting. I am now really confused whether to apply to colleges like Stanford/ Cornell and other big engg colleges? Thanks.

A 1990 will get you admitted to some good engineering schools but not the topmost and most selective ones like Stanford/Cornell. Have you visited the international students forums? Go there and ask to see what schools might be viable and affordable. Hurry, as deadlines are approaching.

1990 is too low  try to bring it up to 2150 + and then u have a much better chance

I also have an IELTS band score of 8. Will this be of any help? SAT is just a sort of English proficiency test right?

However you view the SATs, the fact is top schools are innundated with intl applicants with much higher scores than you. This is your hurdle.

Ok thanks

Also, on a different note. You don’t add up you SAT II scores. Those are viewed separately and individually (although those are some darn impressive scores) Work on raising your SAT I scores

SAT I is just so boring. I simply can’t concentrate on the word list and the reading passages are mundane. I got a 1990 with a week’s prep, so giving SAT I again is not an option for me.

Well that is the major metric used, too bad you can’t be bothered with it, as that is the one that affect the college ranking in US News, not SAT II. No one cares that SAT II are single sitting or not, btw. I suppose you will apply where you like, the strong SAT II will reassure them ability-wise, but just realize that you will be falling in the bottom stats of accepted students. So when they say, ok we will Seat 200 international students from 125 different countries, what does the pool from India look like, they may be picking 5 or 10 from your country and it is more likely those students are going to be in the 2200+range. That doesn’t mean your overall profile won’t be look at and given a holistic review so try if you like, obviously the SAT is stupid and you can do the work. But be sure to include some colleges where your score will be a draw.

Thanks  I am being realistic and have applied to UIUC, Purdue, University of Texas, UCLA and Penn State has accepted me. :)

congrats – there are some very STRONG engineering programs among those schools. VERY strong. Good luck on the rest of your apps.

Thanks a lot for all your guidance and your wishes :)

UCLA decisions aren’t out so you are saying you got one strong acceptance at Penn State, then you can put another one or two in for your reach schools, sure.

Sorry I didn’t mean to say UCLA has accepted me, I was doing my assignment so did not pay much attention while typing.

Take the SAT I again and you will have many more options!!

As I said earlier, SAT I is not my cup of tea. Memorizing the word list/reading mundane passages is not something that I am willing to go through again. Thank you for the suggestion though.
