Apply to UCD as Bus. Major = Better chances?

I haven’t decided if I should be applying to UCD as a Business major or a political science major. My passion is in political science, but I think Business has A LOT more to offer career-wise after college.

Anyways, for UCD, which Major has a lower cut-off rate for admission (non-impacted major, low-choice major).

ANy more information on this would be awesome, I love UCD and I HOPE to God that I get in.

Well...since UC Davis doesn't have a business major...
If you apply Managerial Economics you will be Pre-managerial economics, you have to finish 4 or 5 classes with a 3.2 gpa in order to be in Managerial Economics. It's all in the same college, Letters and Science, so I really doubt it will make a difference either way. Goodluck

from the ucd web site:
Entrance Criteria for the Managerial Economics Major

Pre-Major Requirements

Freshmen Admits - New and Continuing
All Freshmen requesting Managerial Economics will be admitted to a Pre-Major. This Pre-Major is taken as an indication of interest in the ME major but in no way does it guarantee entrance into the major. The main purpose of the Pre-Major is to provide advising services and guidance to potential students. Pre-Majors are expected to begin taking the prerequisites for the ME major (see attached List of Pre-Major requirements).

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics will be responsible for housing and advising the pre-majors. The Master Advisor will also serve as the Pre-Major Advisor. There will be a midway checkpoint for all students, if they have not already been admitted into the major, once the pre-major reaches 90 units. For those students who do not meet the required grade-point average (GPA) of 2.8 in the pre-major courses, the student will be advised to seriously consider selecting another major. A student will be admitted into the Major once he or she has successfully completed all the prerequisites for the ME, with a GPA minimum. The student must complete a Change of Major petition and fill out a Proposed Study Plan. Admission into the ME Major does not depend upon the total number of units completed.

wow only 2.8?

WHAT?! Davis has no Business major? I don't think I want to do Econ, I hate math.

So if I apply to the UC system under Business, i won't be allowed into Davis?

I'm not sure how this works, can someone explain?

hahahahahaha dude you want to be a business major and you hate math? get another major

It may have changed.. but when I applied to the UC's back in 2001 (for Fall-02 admission)... I was able to select which UC's to apply to AND what major for each UC... so just because you apply business to one school, doesn't mean you have to apply business to ALL of them.

But yeah, if you do want to do business you will have to learn some math.. I just peaked in the course catalog & for a man. econ. major they have to take Math 16a,b, and c, and also Statistics 13 & 103. I don't think that sounds too bad.. the math 16 series is calc, but it's the easier series.. math 21 is the harder series.

Poli sci majors have to take Statistics 13, 32 & 102.

I don't know which major will give you better admission chances since I'm not in that sort of area.

Is it easy to change from poly sci to economics at the UCs, especially davis?

For example, I apply as a poly sci major to get a boost in chances of getting in, and then switch to Econ after a year in Davis.

Any ideas?

sure. You can switch very easily. I just switched from Poli Sci to Economics, i just had to fill out a form at the econ office, piece of cake.

Ah I see, thanks.

is economics an impacted major at UCD or is it a major that has a low cut-off rate?

Davis DOES NOT have an undergrad business major program

good observational skills owdi dude. go back and read the thread, especially the second post. ;)

Please don't just take my word on this do a little research yourself by placing a phone call to some graduate schools and asking around. The majority of graduate schools DO NOT want applicants who have undergraduate degrees in business. They would prefer you have a degree in almost any other area. Economics is a great way to go for undergrad. I AM NOT saying that anyone with an undergrad degree in business will automatically not get accepted into grad school, just that it is not the preferred degree. Like I said, ask around and do your research. If you want a successful career in business having a graduate degree is almost a total necessity these days.

But I heard that Economics major require a lot of tough math... I'm not exactly GREAT in mat.

Nobody is born great or not great at something. You can get an A if you go to office hours, tutoring, carefully do your homework. If you're not willing to sacrifice, then how can you succeed. BTW, econ only requires 16-series, it's not even very difficult -just ask 17 and 21 series people. Unless you major in something like Ethnic Studies, you're going to have to take Calculus. Also...business requires a lot of math just to let you know.

Here is a link to a great article on choosing a major:

http://www.worldwidelearn.com/online-education-guide/what-is-a-college-major.htm

Here is an excerpt from the article:

Many high school students benefit from the guidance of knowledgeable college advisors and career counselors. These experts can help analyze your academic performance and your interest in extracurricular activities to suggest some potential college major choices. For example, if you excel in history classes and enjoy participating in your school's debate team, a counselor might suggest some strong political science programs. Likewise, strong math skills and an active role in your schools' Junior Achievement program might suggest your inclination toward a business major.

Man Econ is NOT in the College of L/S. It is in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

my mistake. man econ is in ag.

It is in the College of L/S... not in the College of A/E

No, karupt, that's regular econ. I AM a Man Econ major. Are you telling me that I don't know what college my major is in???? LOL.

Man econ is definately Ag, they don't show up on Honor Roll even though my friends in man econ get 3.5+gpas.
Econ is Letters and Science
