how is the econ major?? i have 2 decide b/w here and ucsd…

My d is in the managerial economics major at UCD and she loves it. There are excellent opportunities for internships and so far the professors are great.

whats the diff between mangerial econ and just econ?

managerial economics is business focused and is in a different college. The prerequisite gpa is higher and in the end you earn a BS.

which one is more focused and less broad? Thanks!

Economics tends to be much more broad, and covers the economy as a whole: market trends, GDP, the Fed, etc. Managerial economics, as stated above, focuses more on the business end of economics, and therefore is more specialized and geared towards business management, etc.

Economices has foreign language GE requirements vs. managerial economics which has science GE requirements. Use the links I provided to see more about each major and the required classes.

My daughter is trying to decide from the following schools - UCD, UCI, UCSC, UCSB, UCR and Cal Poly. USC is still pending. She is leaning towards going into business, possibly marketing. One of her concerns is that only Cal Poly and UCR have a business program. She really likes the Davis but her/our only concern is that it does not have a business program. Does Managerial Economics prepare you for a business? Do it integrate any accounting, marketing, finance into the program? Also, how marketable is someone that graduates with the Managerial Econ degree if they want to get into marketing or accounting?

Right now her favorites are Davis or Cal Poly. She has always wanted to go to a UC but is considering Cal Poly because of their reputation for having a good business program. If she gets into USC I'm sure she'll also be interested in that school, but YIKES $47K/year!!!

From the UCD web-site
The managerial economics major at UC Davis goes beyond the limits of traditional economics and business majors, blending a thorough grounding in economic theory with business knowledge and applications. You will specialize in at least one of three options: managerial economics, which focuses on evaluating, financing and managing business activities; environmental and resource economics, which focuses on issues related to use of resources and environmental quality; or agricultural economics, which focuses on the business aspects of producing and marketing foods and fibers. The real-world focus of this major provides ideal preparation for transition into the business world or to postgraduate business administration programs.

Real World

Managerial economics majors from UC Davis have entered careers in every area of business and industry, including marketing, analysis, consulting and financial service. They work with organizations such as Apple Computer, Deloitte & Touche, Mervyn's, Bogle Vineyards and Pacific Bell. Many have also become entrepreneurs, launching businesses in areas as diverse as real estate and magazine publishing. Others have entered advanced degree programs in business management, resource planning and law.

Major Requirements

You will begin your study with a series of core courses in management, economics, calculus and statistics, and either social, natural or agricultural sciences. You will then focus your studies on your specific area of interest, selecting courses in topics such as marketing, taxation, international commodity and resource markets, the role of government in business regulation, real estate and other investments. Many students choose to challenge themselves by enrolling in an honors senior seminar, where they develop projects on areas of personal interest (recent topics have included "The Effects of Tobacco PAC Contributions on Tobacco Legislation" and "What Drives Internet Sales?").

Thanks, that was a quick response. Do you know anything about the Cal Poly business school? What's your opinion . . . would you choose Davis or Cal Poly?

Has you daughter worked any internships? How easy/hard were they to get? Where were they located?

In general, how does she like going to Davis? When she started at Davis did she know she wanted to be a Managerial Econ major?

Thanks again.

My daughter has an internship and she is a freshman. UCD has one of the largest internship programs in the country. They place over 6000 students a year. She LOVES Davis (chose it over UCSD and UCSB). Her internship (it's for UCD) is directly related to experiece she had in high school for student government so she was well qualified. She decided on business/economics as a high school junior after taking a course. She is very strong in math. Does your daughter like math?

As for Cal Poly I love it there. What a great college town much like Davis. My daughter has friends in the business program who are quite happy. For my daughter the size and spirit of Davis were just perfect so it was an easy choice. She just felt that overall Davis had more to offer for her interests. Both are great schools. Has your daughter visited yet?

Here look at this link about internships

My d loves the Davis campus. She took off on a Friday and spent the day in Davis attending classes and seeing the campus, and then spent the night in the dorms with a friend. She felt very comfortable there. She's very active in student government too - she was junior class president and is currently the senior class president. Since she's been small she has loved to help out at school . . . no job was too small for her when asked for help. She's not strong in math. Will that hinder her? She may just have to work a little harder in those stat/math type courses. She's taking AP Stat now and it is not one of her favorite classes.

I have a son at UCSD and he likes it there. He's in the sciences and works really hard (so he tells me) to keep up w/ the classes. It seems like there isn't as much social activities as Davis. It suites him just fine but my daughter thrives on school spirit stuff. Davis seems to have the good 'ol college town excitement.

Is Davis a commuter school like Irvine? Do a lot of the kids go home on the weekends? We're from the Bay Area so it's only a little more than a hour away.

Well, thanks for the info.

Forgot to mention that we haven't visited Cal Poly yet but are planning on going down during spring break.

The only reason I ask about math is because your d will have to make her way through the calculus series for managerial economics. 16A is the toughest so tell her to take it seriously and take advantage of the free tutoring and study groups. Statistics is another requirement, but it sounds like she is building a good foundation now. As I recall the gpa requirement is 3.0 in calculus 16 A, B and C, statistics, and econ micro and macro. Your daughter sounds perfect for the major and since math is not her favorite subject marketing is an excellent choice. For my d school spirit was really important and Davis is filled with it. She loves all the sports (26 teams more than any other UC). Cal Poly is very sports oriented and I believe they have something like 20 teams (a lot) with good spirit too. I think it will come down to which school she likes the best. She does sound like the perfect UCD gal. Will she rush? UCD is not a commuter school, no worries there. The campus is active and lively every weekend (except finals, lol). My daughter rarely comes home and is sometimes even too busy for a phone call, but it's all good.

Thank you for all your input. I took her to the UCI Destination session in the Bay Area this morning and she has definitely ruled out that college. I'm going to take her one more time to Davis before she has to decide, and we'll also go to Cal Poly. Decisions . . . decisions . . .

Sad to hear she decided UCI wasn't for her. Can I ask why?

No problem, I'm happy to help. I know how difficult it is to make these decisions, but be glad she has such great choices! Perhaps I will see you at Cal Poly as I will be visiting there with my sons during break.
