I feel your sorrows of repetitively applying to boarding school. I’ve had my heart set on it since seventh grade. It’s the reason I’m up at 12 o’ clock at night… just wishing I could be looking forward to my first day at boarding school.

Anyways, I second 2010Hopeful. I’m applying as a repeat tenth grader. If I was lucky enough to get in, I definitely would want more than two years somewhere.

… I just noticed this thread is really old, but I’m replying anyways because I’m new and I have a lot on my mind…

I strongly believe that you should improve your list a tad bit…if you were rejected/WL by Deerfield and Choate when you applied as a 10th grader, what makes you think you’ll get accepted as an 11th grader (just a reminder, there are fewer spots as a junior. which makes the acceptance rate for 11th grade much much lower). Although, I do believe repeating 10th grade would be an incredibly bad idea, I think you should drastically change your list. I understand you still want to apply to Deerfield and Choate just to give it another go, but Loomis Chaffee is still really selective. As few people have mentioned, you should think of adding NMH to your list (high acceptance rate + love internationals), as well as maybe Blair, Governors, Concord, Kent, Tabor, St. Georges (still selective, but not as selective as HADES), and I can’t remember if you put St. Mark’s on your list or not. Also, you should aim for something MUCH higher then an 1800 on the SAT. I think anything above a 1950 (2000 would be better though) would help you a lot.

Good advice, JB.

Out of curiosity, why would repeating tenth grade be a bad idea (doesn’t apply to me, just want to know).

OP, as for SSAT scores try to score a 2200+, that usually guarantees somewhere in the 80+ percentile which is competitive enough for most schools.

Well, it’s really just my personal opinion. From someone who was offered a spot at two seperate schools as a repeat 10th grader, after doing a lot of research I concluded that repeating would really just be a waste of an entire year, specially when you have several other schools that would accept you for 11th grade rather than for 10th grade as a repeater. The only pro of repeating would be being able to take advanced courses…but really, wasting an entire year to take an advanced course is not worth it, specially when yuu can just wait for college to take those courses. People say another pro would be that you’d be able to make more friends/create tighter bonds, well, I disagree. You wouldn’t be the only new kid entering 11th grade, and you’d all be leaving each other after graduation anyways (most likely). Of course, other people completely oppose my opinion, but I’m just giving the OP my 2 cents. :)

And yeah, a 2200 would give you a much better guarantee at really, any of the schools.
