Background: I am an upcoming freshman at an average four year university in NJ but I want to transfer to Rutgers NB after my freshman year which means I’ll be applying there this fall. I applied to Rutgers Newark for SAS and SB and got in but didn’t go there because of the location. However I also applied to Rutgers NB- school of arts and sciences (I wanted to major in bio before but not anymore) and didn’t get in.
Now I want to become an accountant and Rutgers has a very good business school and it’s close enough for me to commute. I graduated high school with a 3.9 GPA and got a 1100/1600 (which I know isn’t great and it’s probably the main reason I didn’t get into NB. I wish I had tried harder on it). I know Rutgers won’t look at my SAT scores when I apply as a transfer since I will have 12+ credits after this fall semester but they will look at my high school transcript since I’ll have less than 24 credits by the end of this fall. Is my high school GPA good enough for the Rutgers business school?
I obviously don’t know what my college GPA is going to by the end of this fall semester but I’m really hoping for anything above 3.6+ and participate in about 4 to 5 clubs this semester. Besides the in college clubs, I don’t have any employment experience or any volunteer hours expect for the 3 to 4 clubs I was involved in in high school. Are volunteer hours or employment experience a big factor when they are deciding if they want to admit you or not?
On the Rutgers application, it gives the applicant a space to enter their extracurricular activities and it says which grade the applicant was involved in that certain activity (9,10,11, or 12). However, if I am involved in an extracurricular activity in college, where could I put it in my application? Also, is it wise to include the clubs that I was involved in in high school or should I leave that out and only include the clubs from college?
In other words, even if I didn’t get into Rutgers NB as a senior, will I be able to have a fair chance of getting into their business school with a GPA around 3.6 and involvement in couple of clubs in college?
I’m the first to even graduate high school in my family so I can’t really ask anyone in my family for any advice on college related things so any advice from any Rutgers transfers or any college student will be appreciated.
I am a prof at a 4year nj university and am often asked about Rutgers transfers. For transfer, your college GPA and course level will matter the most, and so will your high school transcript. Rutgers is numbers oriented, and their business school is more competitive than arts and sciences. Focus on getting the grades. Did you place into any developmental courses at the 4 year university?
You high school GPA and SAT scores are within range for most of our “average” NJ state universities. It is below the range for Rutgers New Brunswick, and so that’s why you need to step up the grades in college if you wish to transfer.
No I wasn’t placed into any developments course at my university. I’m on level for all of my classes.
Getting good grades and doing well in a classroom isn’t a problem for me. It’s just standardized tests that I have trouble with. I was at the top 20% of my class (obviously isn’t the best but I do work very hard in school to do as best as I can).
It is significantly easier to gain admission as a transfer than it is as a freshman.
If you are trying to gain admission into the business school, having fulfilled your necessary pre-requisites AND having a GPA of at least 3.5 is necessary to be competitive in the process.
The general rule of thumb for gaining transfer admission into RU-NB (which is not really applicable to EMSOP, RBS, and even SOE in some cases) is that you should have at least a 3.0 and no D’s or F’s within your last 10 credits or so. Keep in mind that recently, the business school has become highly competitive. I still have known quite a few people who got in with 3.2-3.3 GPA’s.
Please, please, please make sure that you fulfill their requirements and look up your courses via NJtransfer.org to ensure that you are taking courses that are actually equivalencies to your reqs/pre-business courses at Rutgers. If you get all A’s and B’s and you meet the reqs, you should have no trouble getting in. So many students have wonderful grade point averages but are rejected because they failed to satisfy enough of the requirements. A 3.6 and requirements will be enough to get in.
And hey, the worst case scenario is that you get into SAS and pursue a school-to-school transfer, which really requires a 3.0 and fulfilling the requirements. It won’t be so bad as you will have access to many of the resources that RBS students are exposed to and many of them will be your classmates anyway due to the interdisciplinary nature of the curricula of the various Rutgers New Brunswick schools.
