Applying as an Engineering Major

So basically every school wants to know what your intended major is. I know that I want to major in engineering, but I haven't decided on a discipline yet. Should I apply as "Engineering Undeclared" or should I just pick one that I'd be interested in?

Usually there is an option to select Undecided (or General) Engineering. It is fine to select that if you are not yet sure. Some schools even make students wait to decide on a specific major for the first semester or two.

It doesn’t make much of a difference. If “engineering undeclared” is an option, that’s fine. If not, just pick a discipline that you think might interest you. The first year will probably be identical for all engineering disciplines anyway.

Whether it makes a difference depends on the school. Check the school’s web site to see if changing major to an engineering major is difficult (may depend on if the target major is popular enough to be at capacity). Engineering undeclared may be able to bypass any change-major hurdles at some schools, but check the school to be sure.

I was an undecided engineering major as a freshman and then chose a more specific field in the second semester of my freshman year. It was not very difficult to switch from undecided to my specific field. But it all depends on the school.

Alright, thanks for the feedback!

For some tippy top schools if declare Engineering then you need to submit along with your SAT I/ACT, SAT subject scores for Math II and a science of your choice to be admitted for Engineering.
You need to read each college’s requirements now so you can take your SAT IIs as needed.

It might matter if you are looking at UIUC…The knuckleheads somehow decided that ChemEs don’t belong in Engineering, so ChemEs are actually admitted to Arts & Sciences, not Engineering.

Fortunately, the kids decided to go elsewhere.

^LOL smooth move UIUC
