Applying as art major...chances?

Hello…

so Penn is my reachiest of reaches…i doubt i have much of a chance at all but if anyone could help me assess my situation i’d really appreciate it

SAT: Math- 710, Verbal, 700
SAT II: Math I C, 690, Writing, 650, Us hist, 580 (AH!)
gpa…about a 93, 94 weighted
senior year classes
AP french 5
AP literature
Ap Calc BC
Ap art (double period)

2 lovely recs

major ecs:

graphic editor of school newpaper
graphic editor of school magazine
co- editor of year book
writing tutor
volunteer and assistant tour guide at local museum

multiple awards won for art work in newpaper

also i went to penn for a personal interview with the dean of the art school…she told me my portfolio was very good and then spent about an hour of her time giving me a personal tour of the art department…she told me she would write admissions a note

so what do you think…did i waste my time?

i got in early as an art major and did the whole meeting w/the dean (my letter to admissions came from the head of photo, though) what kind of artwork do you do? are you applying for fine arts or visual studies? your ec's definitely support your art hook so that's really good. if you want to see what I had when applying ed check out the the thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6742 . anyway good luck! i hope to see more art majors there!!

wow--i'm so jealous!

i paint, sculpt, and illustrate...i'm a bit obsessed
i'm applying to "the college" as a fine art major ...do u think that will help my chances at all
- after reading about ur ecs and legacy i feel as though i have no chance at penn

were you interviewed by Julie Schneider?

(yes i agree---def not enough prospective art majors on this site...esp not enough liberal art minded art majors)

........bump

wow sculpt!! that's awesome!! yeah i was interviewed by Julie Schneider, she didnt seem to like me that much tho, so you definitely have that to your advantage!! and dont worry, I only sent the ec's i was really into to penn so it wasnt that long of a list, I really think we're similar applicants!and fine arts will totally help, it's almost like a hook in itself since theres soemthing like 20 art majors a year. (surprising b/c I thought the art facilities were incredible...)

yeah julie schneider almost seemed indifferent at first....but before i left i asked her what she thought of my work because i had traveled like four hours to get there ...and wasn't about to leave feeling unsure.....

the only thing that worries me is....personally i really didn't like julie ...i dunno if she's the kinda of prof i'd want for four years...considering she's the main painting prof......but i mean it's penn...and she's only one teacher - so yeah

it's reassuring that u said that about julie though--because even though she said my stuff was "good" i was concerned -- usually i get a little more enthusasm....i think she's really just kinda cold

but anyhow....all i can do now is wait....i hope i see you next september!

yeah i got the same sense, i think it's just an administrator thing. where else did you apply?

everywhere...
syracuse, boston university, carnegie mellon, washington is st.louis, cornell, nyu, delaware, yale (just on a whim), and cooper union (hometest hasn't arrived yet though)
upenn is my #1 though...i thought they had great facilites also

yeah, i had syracuse, wash u, cornell and nyu. loved syracuse, liked wash u and was really dissapointed with nyu (i had thought it would be my no. 1, but that's just because the photo dept wasn't really that great) well, good luck! crossing my fingers for you!
