How much harder is it to apply to be an 11th grader at one of the elite schools vs. a sophomore or freshman?
I know that had I applied as a freshman, or even a sophmore, my application couldn't even compare to what I am now, but how much harder is it just because you are not starting from the beginning?

It is typically more difficult to be admitted to the 11th grade for two reasons: (a) there are fewer available spaces for new 11th graders and (2) you have to "hit the ground running" as a new 11th grader, in a year full of AP/rigorous courses which counts a lot for college admissions and where everyone else has already had 1-2 years to adjust.

However the chances of getting in are zero if you don't apply! Best of luck to you.

My son entered as a (repeat) junior and did just fine. There are usually only a few spots, but there are not as many applicants, either. There are also new PGs and new kids in the soph class, so you aren't alone in trying to adjust.
