I'm in 9th grade now and I was thinking about applying next year for junior year at a boarding school.
What exactly are the downsides and upsides to applying for junior year? Is it better to just stick with your current high school at that point? I know it is more competitive, but exactly how much more?

Another question I have is: is it too late to apply for 2007-2008? I read about a "second round" of admissions somewhere and I'm wondering what that precisely means.

Thank you beforehand!

It is too late to apply to 2007-2008. By second round, they might mean the second round that admissions officers go through in looking over applications. I'm not sure.

For applying for eleventh grade, it is very competitive but you do have a chance at some schools. Take the SSAT and see how you do compared to what other schools' averages are. We can give you a lot of information here. Find out what schools you want and what level of difficulty - extremely challenging, not challenging, etc.

A few eleventh-grade applicants on here include blairt and Msu. try sending them a PM (private message) - to do just click on their username in blue and something will come up. If you need help, private message me or post here.

It's not too late to apply for 2007-2008. If you apply, you'll get the decision letter after April 10, when the traditional applicants notify the school if they plan on attending.

Jonathan is correct. Many schools still accept late applications through the spring. It helps to be an exceptionally strong candidate.

Unless you are extremely miserable at your current school, and have been for a while, I caution you against switching schools - even to a different local school - for 11th grade. Admissions difficulty aside, you would be getting used to things while your peers are taking leadership roles and starting the college process. (Exception would be if you are a very strong athlete.) I know families who have turned down relocations or have had parents in 2 locations so their kids would not have to move schools as jrs or srs.

If you want to go to BS, think about applying to repeat 10th grade and getting a more complete experience. How old are you? If you would be under 16 1/2 at the start of your repeat year I doubt you would be among the oldest in your grade.

On late applications, I think it is a possibility mostly below the top tier, at schools where your credentials would have made you a shoo in during the regular cycle. I guess you should call the schools - but not this week!

Has anyone here used the second round admission?

To the OP: It may or may not be too late to apply. Have you taken the SSAT or PSAT or Catholic school exam yet? The SAT or ACT may also be valid for some schools (often taken by students in grades 7,8 and 9 in gifted programs like Duke's TIP Program or the Univ. of Denver or Johns Hopkins depending upon where you live). You most likely are late for the elite prep schools which have highly competitive admissions with long waiting lists. But these make up only a small portion of private schools. Some students do enter in grade 11 and do quite well, however, only a very few spots are available at the top schools after grade 10. Most private schools, day and boarding, will take applications until the class is full.

wait wut?
