Applying for a Media Studies major with a Bachelors in Design

Greetings,

I'm interested in applying for a Masters in Media Studies from the US or Canada,

I hold a Bachelors in Design from a reputable art school in Pakistan, with a 3.5+ CGPA (my schools grading policy was very steep) and a distinction in thesis, was on my university's Honor's list for 6 semesters, held several important extracurricular positions during my college years, and was given the college founder's award as well as an academic award for my Bachelors dissertation on graduating. I will be in dire need of significant financial assistance for my graduate degree - I can't afford even a single semester's fees on my own.

I was particularly interested in MIT's Comparative Media Studies program - how difficult would it be to get into? Can anyone recommend other good programs that might be a good fit for me?

One concern of mine is that, apart from my bachelors dissertation I have little research experience...opportunities for research in fields like this are few and far between in Pakistan. I have been working in the field of HCI on creating cheaper alternatives to technologies that are cutting edge in the developed world, i.e, motion detection and gestural interfaces.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

they accept 10/yr for their MS program. http://cms.mit.edu/academics/index.php

You may want to look into Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) aka Computer-Human Interaction (CHI)

Your bachelor’s dissertation may be enough for a master’s program. Most graduate programs understand the differences in educational opportunities abroad. A thesis, if done properly, is indeed research.

That said, the MIT program will be tough to get into, just because it is highly competitive for everyone. Study the program’s web site to see what they are looking for. Research the faculty. Make sure your personal statement and interests fall within the program’s own areas of expertise.

In the US, newer and interdisciplinary fields will have different names at different universities. If you do some serious online research of professors who do work in your field of interest, then you’ll be able to backtrack to find programs. Not all will fund master’s students, and some will only partially fund them. Look under the support or financial aid links to see which may be funded.
