<p>I have a bachelor degree in civil engineering from Berkeley with a 3.45 GPA and three summer research. I know for sure that I want a Ph.d. However, with my background, I'm not sure if I should apply strap but for a PhD program or apply for a master program first.</p>

<p>I’d talk with your favorite profs. Generally applying for a masters only makes sense if that will be your final degree and those are unfounded. Phd programs are more competitive and funded. </p>
<p>If you get into your phd program you may get your masters in the first year or soon thereafter. Many find it helpful tonwork awhile after getting a bachelors degree before getting advanced degrees.</p>
