Applying for Chemistry vs. Engineering

I’ve been told that I should apply for chemistry instead of engineering because my stats are not good enough. (Here are they for reference: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1804373-chances-for-mit-stanford-cornell-etc-im-an-international-student.html#latest)

  1. Is it really true that chemistry is an easier major to get in? How much do admissions officers really care about what major I select?
  2. Since I'm part of extracurriculars that focus more on engineering but I may have SAT scores, a GPA, and a curriculum that are below expectations, should I still apply for engineering over chemistry?

Thanks. I’d appreciate any comments and suggestions. (This is just to prove something to my admissions counselor.)

You’re overthinking this. Do you actually think someone would knock you for your HS engineer-type ECs while stating you want to be a chem major? That’s a baseless concern.
