Well, it’s kind of like adcoms see a lot of ‘experiences’ as excuses as to either why you don’t have this GPA, or don’t have these pre-reqs done, etc. but what you can do is, like ironic said, talk about how experiences have made you grow and become a better student, citizen, and just overall a better person.

The buddhism thing is a nice attribute to them and you can definitely weave that in nicely. But don’t make it the central point. Cornell would be like, ‘alright nice, so we know you’re not Jewish, so…why do you want to come here?’ XDD

I’m just poking fun, but you get the idea, make Cornell see that you’re a great fit by showing them there’s no other school for you.

Well… since this forum is going to be a 3rd home for the next 3 months (reminds me of last year applying…) I might as well introduce myself.

I’m from Canada applying to Biological Sciences at CALS. Can’t wait for this application season. Last time around I screwed up the trifecta: poor marks, poor refs, poor essays; but good ECs.

This time I moved things around: good marks (or at least, as good as I can do), good refs (I hope!), and good essays (unwritten… but I’m starting a month earlier this time); and decent ECs.

If I’m only applying to Cornell, my personal statement on the Common App should be Cornell-focused right? I’m just worried it will sound the same as the one on my Supplementary… Any tips?

heyy guys, im applying to Cornell in the fall too.

Crazy good recs. one from the dean bc he was my macroeconomics teacher
and one from a graduate professor at columbia bc i won a writing scholarship from her.

collegebatman, cornell was the only school i applied to, too, and i did exactly what you want to do. i made my commonapp essay about general things that i like about the school and then made my supplement focus on my major and why i’m interested in my particular major.

poleandreel, your HS may be weak for CAS. also econ is one of the most competitive majors within CAS. you may have a hard time showing your interest in econ or writing fully if you haven’t been focused on just one so far, because they’ll want to see that you’ve been testing your interest through taking classes and your ECs.

Thats true but ive already taken macro and micro economics in college and got an A in both. and i took english comp and got an A and im taking enllish lit this semester. do you think that will help?

I have a question. I am applying to CALS for an Environmental Science major. All the different choices they have are confusing me. I noticed on the supplement that there is a choice “Environmental undecided.” Would choosing that hurt me in anyway since transfers are not really supposed to be “undecided?”

I am really tempted to choose that but if that would hurt me in the admission process then I would obviously wouldn’t select it.

Anyone else applying for something in the Environmental sciences??

i’ve only ever known one person who transferred in to cornell as undecided within their college. it was another CALS person, but still, i think it’s better to be set on a major because then it’ll also help you write your essays. you’ll be able to show them why you’re interested in the school/major that way instead of vaguely saying that you’re interested in all things environmental.

true, i second water’s offer to help with questions and essays.

knight, CAS requires SAT scores
azonic, i wouldn’t send them earlier than that window because things tend to get lost if you send them in earlier than that.

I am a sophomore at a small liberal arts college in MN, applying to SHA - Financial Management program. Here’s my stats

Academic:

International student, have been living in Europe, Asia and North America.

Finance major at current college, GPA 3.95 with some upper level course like Multivariables Calc, Investment and Commercial Banking

I’m an Academic Role Model, something like 24/7 tutoring services for 40 male freshman

Honors Program, got some academic awards at my school.

ECs:
Admitted as an analyst intern to one of the biggest investment fund in South East Asia next summer
Started and edit a finance blog with currently 7 co-authors and average 100 views/day
Treasurer of 2 clubs
Tax preparer for low income residents
Technical Assistant at the college’s computer lab
Some leadership trainings at school.

I’m kinnda nervous because of my international status but I hope I’ll have a chance to get in. My long-term goal is to start a hedge fund in Asia, just wonder if it would be a plus for SHA. If you could give me some advice it would greatly appreciated.

p/s: is there anyone else going for Hotel Administration ?

If you want to start hedge fund, why would you choose to join the School of Hotel Administration?

Side Question to everyone else:

My academic counselor doesn’t know me personally. On the evaluation portion she wrote down “See attached evaluations from instructor(s)”

Should I ask her to write just 4-5 sentences on what she does know about me? I’m afraid that this will make the admissions officers wonder why she didn’t even bother to write anything down.

How much does the “College Official’s Report” weigh in on the admissions process anyway?

duynguy, your stats are solid, and i know that the hotel school really likes to see relevant ECs. i don’t know much about the financial major, but it seems like you have ECs that could help you out. have you considered AEM or econ or just applied math or something? all of those would help you with a hedge fund

yeah, azonic, don’t worry too much about it. if your LORs are good, those will matter much more

duynguy, definitely kind of a weird fit for hotel school, but if you can shine in your interview/essays (do hotellie transfers get an interview?..i don’t remember) then that’s fine, go for it. But like ironic said, AEM and even ILR might suit you even more than Hotel (unless that’s just you stating a longterm goal, but you really like the hotel industry as your main career.)

azonic, my ‘advisor’ since I was at a community college, was only my dean of admissions, who barely knew my name. So no, they don’t count it much, since my common app form for that was almost blank. Having your instructors and management of any jobs you’ve had giving you recommendations is much better.

@Knight, yeah you’ll need to send SAT scores. Every school pretty much wants you to send them, but they matter very little to some schools in regards to transfer students, just like your HS GPA/status/ECs/etc. won’t count for much as a transfer.

can someone point me to the right direction on how to apply to cornell for their business program? i can’t seem to find their business program on their site…? and do i use the common app or cornell’s own application (i never even heard of the common app until today…)?

@lakeforever24
Cornell’s undergraduate business program is Applied Economics Management(AEM) which is belonged to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences(CALS).
And common application is the only one you can use for cornell.
