Applying for Math20C, anyone know these teachers?

Has anyone had Jim Agler, Marc Daniel Keilberg, Martha Yip, or Michael Shulman before? I'm really worried about my next math teacher because the current one turned out to be terrible. I tried looking them up in RatemyProfessor.com, but very few turned up. Any help appreciated.

Agler is terrible. I’m taking my chances with Martha Yip. Just because it works out with my schedule. Are you taking 20B with Lif****z? If you are, yes she’s terrible. Just completely awful but I’m studying the material on my own and I am confident I know the material.

Her lectures on series are completely worthless though.

I’m taking 20B with Shirazi right now. Any info on any of the other teachers out there, specifically Keilberg? Thanks for the info on Agler, I’ll keep that in mind.

I have Shirazi too, not the best teacher… hahah

I’m taking my chances with Martha Yip as well just because of schedule. If she is bad, hopefully the other classes wont be filled and i can just transfer.

Don’t take Keilberg or Agler. See RMP for details on Agler. Keilberg is a PhD student who just started teaching. He messes up on examples a lot and makes tricky tests. I’m pretty sure Shulman is an American visiting professor; that’s all I know of him. Yip has no accent and is supposed to be decent; standard exams and note-taking lecturing style. I don’t think she’s ever taught 20 series though, so I’m not sure how well her 10 series teaching translates to the 20 sequence.

Yip - yay
Keilberg, Agler - nay
Shulman - ???

Alright, thanks a lot for the info! Makes my decision-making infinitely easier. Is there anyone who knows anything about Shulman?

Keilberg is a PhD student who just started teaching. He messes up on examples a lot and makes tricky tests.

i second this. I have keilberg for math right now and the class average on the first midterm was a very low F :frowning: don’t take him if you can help it!

Wow, that sounds pretty harsh. Was it bad teaching or was the midterm just really hard?

Anyone have Shulman? I wanted yip but all her classes are waitlisted. I dont know if i should bother waitlisting or just take Shulman

yep same thing here, still wondering how Shulman is.

anyone? =

new sections opened…Does anyone have any info about Foley?

I found this on google

[Math 10B Home](http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~mkeilber/math10b/)

So i guess he was a TA for keilberg. I’m just going to take my chances with shulman since its the same time. Having a smaller class might be a good thing about foley though

Keilberg is new. I have a feeling he doesnt know how to calibrate his tests yet. The first midterm was really hard, the second easy(er) (avg was 44/100, the second 73/100)
Foley was my TA. He seems like a good teacher even though his writing is a scrawl.

^ how do you think foley would be as a prof compared to shulman/yip?

No one has any info on Shulman still. If he’s bad, i would switch to Foley just because of the small class size.

^what Andrew said. I dont know anything about Shulman

^ Yup, hes a nice guy and his tests were fair. Class was definitely not tough and the TAs were terrific. (I thoroughly enjoyed my discussion with Michael) But past all this, i would’ve liked learning tougher material because i feel like this class might bite me in the ass in the rest of the series.
