Applying for Musical Theatre at Emerson?

Last year my son applied to Emerson as a Musical Theatre major.

First, you apply to the college, and pay the tuition fee.
Second, you set up an audition date, and pay the audition fee.
Finally, you show up for the audition, and only then, you’re told “If you can’t dance already, there isn’t anything we can do in 4 years to teach you.” !!!
If that’s their attitude, why don’t they tell you that before you give them your money?

Wow they really said that? My daughter has this school on her list. She can dance a little; she’s had classes over the years and takes dance in school. Isn’t the point of these programs to identify potential and provide the education/training? What sort of dancer do they want you to be?

@MTparent2021 that’s too funny because my daughter thought the dance audition at Emerson was odd. She’s a dancer. She got an acting offer there not MT which I thought was a little odd. Emerson is a great school just not the one for my kid. @collegemom2000 is hard to know what they are looking for in any program. Craft a well balanced list of colleges that your daughter can see herself at and put together the best audition you can based on her experience. If you haven’t been dancing since you were age 3 you are not going to be able to compete with someone who has but if you put in a confident effort at an audition the auditors will see that.

Hi, my daughter is not a dancer and auditioned last year for Emerson. It was her number one choice. She is first a singer, 2nd an actor. She’s never taken Dance. She walked away from Emerson feeling so excited because of the Cohort program they have partnering with Berklee and Boston Conservatory, every vocalists dream. She decided she would open her mind to a theatre performance degree along with an MT. She did get into Musical Theatre not being a dancer, It is possible. My D ended up at CUA in DC for financial reasons. She loves it working towards a BM in MT. Emerson is an amazing school but don’t count on much financial aid. Good luck to your daughter.
