applying form the same hs

my son recently came to me concerned because 2 other seniors from his class are also applying to tufts, and their gpa is higher than his...is this a true concern? are the number of applicants from a single hs limited? will they compare those 3 against each other? or do they all just go into the pool and come out as they may?
thanks for any response....

I'm not sure about how the applicant pools are divided, so I will leave it to Dan to answer that.

However, even if he is compared, he shouldn't worry that about his lower GPA. He can "make up" for it by having stellar essays, SAT scores, references, etc. I dont' think one factor can make or break you.

i know that two (maybe more?) seniors from my school last year were accepted at tufts. One was #4 in the class and had really awesome ecs (leadership positions in a ton of clubs). The other was #12, his SAT score was around 150 points higher though. So yeah..dont worry too much

How big was the class, GreenDayFan?

There's a high school near mine that sent 3 (maybe 4) people to Tufts my year. If he's a good applicant, it won't make too much of a difference, I think.

the class was like 295

We don't compare applicants in that way and we don't have a quota or limit on the number of applicants admissible from the same high school. I had a school last year where we accepted 4 of 5 and a school where we accepted 2 out of 22.

Having an admissions officer get excited about one applicant from a high school doesn't make them any less disposed to get excited about the next applicant (in our office, anyway).

Thanks Dan, and all who answered, Tufts is my sons first choice, and this will help ease some of the concerns!

I'm applying to Tufts EDI and my scores are a little low, but I am a national and world Tae Kwon Do champion. Does that give a great enough edge to get accepted?

I think that that would play very well, so the question is how low is "a little low"?

well.... 3.649 GPA (out of 4), CR:610 M:700, W:680 and act: 29
