Applying to british universities... help!

I have a bunch of questions about applying. Are there any extra requirements like tests you have to take to apply? What is the standard that i have to compete with when applying (for instance can i only get into colleges if i have a 4.0 and 2400?)? What would you consider the top 10 institutions to be? How important are extracurriculars in the admissions process?

Firstly, what are you applying for?!

Ask yourself this to get started:

Do I know what type of place/university I would like to attend?

Am I likely to achieve the entry requirements stated?

Do I have an idea where in Britain I would like to study (which region)?

For some courses, yes (e.g. Medicine).

Look up the course you want to study and the university.

Each university has their own entry requirements, look them up (in the international section).

In comparison to the US, not that important.

Oxford

Cambridge

St Andrews

Warwick

London School of Economics (LSE)

UCL

Edinburgh

Imperial College

Bath

Loughborough

These have been ranked by [The Guardian Newspaper.](<a href=“http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2009/may/12/university-league-table"]The”>University guide 2010: University league table | Education | theguardian.com) These are only general guides though, you may find other universities have a better reputation for specific subjects.

You should be able to find all this information by looking on university websites’ propectuses, they’re there for a reason!

Check out this website for lots of your answers: (you have to google “the student room” For some reason it will not cut and paste on CC)

If you have any specific questions and stuff, I can help. I went through UCAS in the 2008/2009 cycle, for entry in the fall of 2009. I’m finishing my first year at Edinburgh now. Let me know if you need help with things!

Spritleing - If I may ask, are you American or British? Is there much of an American presence at Edinburgh?

I’m also applying to UK schools. The ones I’ve picked state entry requirements of a minimum 3.0 GPA, 1800 SAT, and either 2 APs of 3+ or two SAT IIs of 550+. I have a 3.3, 2130, an AP of 4, and SAT IIs of 770 and 660. So I’m fine as far as requirements for being considered, but are my stats likely to get me an offer anywhere? I’ve heard so many different things - some say that UK schools are impossible for US students, some say I’d be in at most places. I’d love some insight.

The Guardian League Table is usually regarded as laughable in the UK. It is a ridiculous joke to regard Loughborough as Top 10 or St Andrews as better than LSE/Imperial.

The Times League Table is regarded as more standard.
