Applying to Bryn Mawr with a lower SAT score

I am a senior applying to Bryn Mawr. I think my grades are pretty close to their criteria (maybe slightly subpar but I have other high points), but I had an unfortunate SAT score (1260, 670 in ERw and 590 in Math). My ERW score was is within their 50% mark, but I’m just curious if I should send my SATs. I am taking the SAT again in December, but is it even worth sending my score there, because they are test optional? Opinions please.

@emmg2017 In my opinion, since BMC and some other colleges give the option to not submit, I would just not submit. They don’t count it against you and instead give you the chance to highlight the areas you’re stronger in. I’m in a similar situation as you (my score is 1240; 670 in ERW and 570 in math) and I’m not sending my scores to Smith, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke or Pitzer because they aren’t amazing.

I’ve heard numerous admissions officers at test optional schools say that you should not send your SAT scores unless they are at or above the midpoint for the school. I would not send your current scores and I would only send your December scores if they turn out to be above the average for the school.

BMC parent here (2nd year). Another vote for “do not submit.”

Another voice for “do not submit.”

If you do better on the retake, BMC does superscore (I’m pretty sure). Then you may want to reconsider submitting.

hmm you guys are lucky! As an international student I have to submit my score…but I hope they do take on consideration that I come from a french school but I am not really far from their SAT range.

Hello! I’m Lisa (BMC '20). I’m a current student worker at the admissions office. Since Bryn Mawr is test optional for domestic students, it is truly up to you whether you submit your test score. I would say, submit your test score if you think it would help your application. However, whatever you decide, your test score would not be the only factor that officers take into consideration for your admissions. The office looks at so many different factors. Here’s a statement from Bryn Mawr’s official website: “Applicants are evaluated using Bryn Mawr’s holistic admission review process, which takes numerous factors into consideration including but not limited to academic coursework and performance, involvement in school and community, leadership qualities, letters of recommendation, quality and content of writing, and potential to contribute in meaningful ways to the Bryn Mawr community.”

I understand that you have already submitted your application at this point, but whether you decided to submit your test-score or not, don’t be nervous about your test score because it won’t be the only factor influencing your application to the college.

Wish you all the best of luck in the decisions season  And for future applicants, hope you would find this information useful!
