Applying to colleges as an adult?

How does that work out? I'm a senior in high school and just signed a 4 year contract with the Marine Corps. I plan to go to college after that as a 22/23 year old. Do I still send in my high school transcripts to the schools I apply to? SAT scores (high school scores or do I retake it as an adult)? What about credit gained from passing AP tests?

Information would be appreciated.

You will send your HS transcripts.

Some places will not ask for any ACT/SAT scores. Some that do require them will accept the ones from when you were in HS. Others will want more recent scores.

Each place that awards credit/placement for AP exam scores sets its own policy about that. So email the admissions offices of the places you are currently interested in, and ask how old AP scores can be, and still be acceptable to them.

Please do make a back-up plan to put into place should your time in the USMC turn out to be shorter than expected. I know a young person who did not make it through boot camp because of a previously undiagnosed medical issue, as well as others who received early medical discharges. Should something like that happen to you, you might want to be ready to apply to college right away.

Wishing you all the best!

Yes, you would use your high school credentials to apply as a frosh if you do not take any college courses after high school graduation. However, many military servicemembers do take college courses during or after their military service and eventually apply as transfer students to universities.

Different universities have different requirements as to whether you are eligible for frosh or transfer admissions. Generally, for transfer students, high school record becomes less relevant or ignored (particularly for those transferring at the junior level) compared to college record. So if your high school record is not that good, then it may be advantageous to start with community college courses, do well there, and then transfer.

Military servicemembers also have the option of applying to the academies, with their commanding officer’s endorsement. For example: [Office of Admissions | Active Duty](http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/stactive.htm)
