I am applying Early Decision to Harvey Mudd. Before starting to write my essays and building my portfolio, can someone give me some input or advice while applying to HMC?
Well, you have to be very strong at math. Most admitted students got an 800 on the SAT Math and Subject Math2 but will also have high scores in Science subject tests AND Humanities subject tests. Make sure you register for the June subject tests to complete your battery if you haven’t completed them yet.
Have you run the NPC? Bring the results to your parents and discuss these results ASAP.
I am taking SAT 2 Physics, Math 2 and Chemistry this June, and I think I will get 800 in all. Do you suggest I take himanities SAT2 too? I am already taking Psychology in school.
Also what do you mean by NPC? I have never heard of it?
Net Price Calculator. Every college has one on their website. You should run it for any college you are considering applying to. It gives you an idea whether that college is likely to be affordable. It would be a problem to ED to Mudd and then-want out of thst agreement due to not enough financial aid if the NPC showed something similar to what they actually award. So run it, and don’t apply ED if it doesn’t look workable.
Have you visited Mudd? It isn’t a school to ED to without a visit. It is very intense academically; I just came from graduation weekend for my kid, and every single student who gave a speech at the senior lunch and graduation itself talked about how hard Mudd is, and all but one discussed failing tests and/or classes.
You don’t have to take a non-STEM subject test, but they do like students who are also strong in humanities areas. Read the school mission statement and you will see why. Also, take note of required recommendations. In the past they’ve wanted at least one non-STEM recommender.
From my experience applying to HMC this year, @intparent seems to have hit the spot. I would also like to add that HMC used to require subject tests in both Math AND science, but have extended the option to include non-STEM related tests as well. So, if you do decide to take a science test, then remember you’re doing what they required earlier which is a good route to take, and if you decide to take a humanities test, then you’re showing them your skill in humanities, something they want to see from applicants. What I’m saying is to just take the test that is best fit for your skills because each type of subject test has its advantages with HMC.
