I am applying to both USNA and USAFA but USNA is my first choice. I was wondering if there are others who are applying to multiple academies? My question is this...for the interview for your second choice academy, do you let them know it's your second choice? Does it affect you chances of gaining acceptance? How do you approach the interview? Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am applying to all 3 Academies (USNA, USAFA, and USMA). Right now, I'm not sure which one I'd rather go to--USNA or USMA. There are pros and cons to each. I've interviewed with each of the Academies, and they never asked me which one was my first choice. They just asked me what other schools I'd be applying to, and they commended me on applying to the other Academies.

Have you been to USAFA? I'm a soccer recruit there, so they flew me up to check it out. I personally didn't like it. I didn't think it compared to USNA. But if you went to the Summer Seminar there, you'd know better than I do. I do know that Inter-Collegiates get MAJOR advantages there, and are despised by a lot. I think I'd go to the USAFA only if I was knocked by USMA, USNA, and didn't get an ROTC scholarship. Anyways... I'll get off my soapbox now. Everyone was really nice there; it just depends on what you're looking for.

The USAFA interview was a lot different than the USNA one. They do this weird thing called "star evaluation," or something like that. I don't know, it's not a big deal. They ask about your activities A LOT.

Thanks for the feedback. No, I haven't been to USAFA. I wasn't able to go to their seminar because of the dates conflicting. From what I've seen, I don't really like their campus and would only choose to go there if I was not accepted to USNA. For the interview: what type of paper work should you have with you to give to your ALO?

Yea, the campus was really ugly. It was NOTHING compared to USNA. USNAs the prettiest one I've seen, and I've been to a pretty good amount: Notre Dame, Georgetown, USMA (the two are pretty equal), Centenary College of Louisiana, Tulane, Sewanee, and a lot more.

Umm, I didn't give my ALO anything, but if I were you, I'd bring my resume. I have a pretty big advantage at USAFA (soccer recruit; the coach is sending me a LOA next week, plus a 3 Star who wrote a letter to the Supe and the Dant for me). Don't worry about the interview. If you're any good at all at interviews, you'll ace it.

Thanks for the advice. I guess i'd really have to think about going to USAFA if i got in and not at USNA. Perhaps a civilian school would be better. I'll try my best for the interview though.

I'm also really torn on which schools to apply to (trying for rotc). Would you recommend any? Right now, the only schools I know I'd want to apply to are Boston U and George Washington U. I need to make a longer list.

Anyone else have recommendations as well?

Hmmm... I guess it depends on what kind of school you're looking for. I'm applying to Georgetown (through GW), so if we both got in and went, we'd be in the same unit! I'm also applying to UVA and Notre Dame. Once you tell me what kind of stuff you're interested in I can give you better suggestions...

Marines4me~WP may be pretty in the summer but it sure cold and dreary up here in the winter!

Good point, JM. That's what my MALO told me. He said it is the most cold place he's ever been in, and that it was a huge change from Alabama weather!

Not to throw a curve ball in your direction, BUT when my son interviewed with his MOCs for his nomination the first question he was asked was if he was applying for more that one service academy, and if so, what his first choice was. The interview committee made it clear that they would nominate an individual for only one academy. They felt that it opened up opportunities for more candidates. Do some soul searching and be prepared for this question, should your MOC share the same philosophy.

I am applying to the Naval Academy, West Point, USAFA, and the Coast Guard, respectively.

I had my Air Force interview on Friday, and the ALO didn't ask me about my choices.

I provided my Air Force ALO with a full resume. I have a Coast Guard interview tomorrow, and I'll do the same.

Navy, of course, is my absolute first choice.

My West Point interview has to wait until after the election--my liasion officer is really involved in politics, and he's going crazy right now.

For all interviews, I've been totally professional. Dress up--look sharp! Study anything you can get your hands on regarding the respective academy. Prepare--with your Mom or Dad--for tough questions. DON'T take the interview lightly! Sell yourself, but at the same time, don't be boastful. Don't just be on time---be early.
Just a few things I've learned so far....

Doug

I think that whether a nominating committee will nominate you for more than one academy is directly related to how competitive your district or state is in terms of applicants. In my daughters case we live in a district where there appears to be relatively few applicants seeking nominations and the staffer indicated to her that it wasn't unlikely that she could end up with a nomination for both USNA and USMA. However, when it comes to the senators, we live in California and with only two of them for such a populous state, it was made clear in their application packet that you were to make ONE choice and one choice only--there would not be multiple academy nominations given to an applicant.
There also appears to be differences between different parts of the country as well with regard to academy interviews. My daughter had her B/G interview but it appears there will be no interview for West Point. The MALO for our area also covers several other districts (shortage of MALO's?) and we have been told that since she has her LOA there won't be an academy interview (maybe because she went to summer seminar?).

Shogun - remind me...isn't she a recruited athlete to WP? I think I've read that MALO interviews are limited for athletes (NCAA rules on contact).

Everything I've seen leads me to believe that the USNA interview is more important than the USMA interview.

If she is "officially" a recruited athlete, no one has told her yet. She was contacted via email by Army's XC coach but that was only to enquire about her times. She hasn't been taken on any athlete visitation trips or anything like that. You could be right, but we sure havn't been told that. Yes, there certainly seems to be a difference in the role of the interview between West Point and Annapolis. Also there is a big difference in timelines of the LOA's between the academies---she received one from WP in mid-July, but the LOA from USNA didn't come till early Oct (after the interview)---

Shogun, your daughter received an LOA from USNA? That's great!!! Wow, 2 LOA's! Is she thinking of XC for USNA?

Yep, she was pretty excited to get two of them. She hasn't been in contact with the navy X/C yet, but should she decide to go there I'm sure she will try out for the team.

That would be awesome, shogun! We COULD be team mates!

There is a current Doolie from our HS who is on the USAF soccer team and was recruited to go there. If you talk to anyone at the USAF,you may want to see how many recruited soccer players got the oppotunity to practice with the team.but never or seldom touched the field.I can tell you,it helped her get into the academy and she loves it there. But,if your goal is to play 4 years, make sure you are talented enough to play. She was a state ODP player!

Bkozy, would you mind shooting me an email? I'd like to know this girl's name. I might have met her!

One thing a lot of people don't get when they make the transition from High School to Collegiate soccer is that they can't expect playing time that first year. Most freshman rarely, if ever, get playing time. The USAF Coach flew me up to see them play, so I know that I could get at least some playing time my frosh year. I'm a state ODP player as well. Bkozy, do you play?
