I only applied to one boarding school because I really only wanted to go to that one. I applied to Exeter because it charmed me in a number of ways and being a part of it would make me weep tears of liquid gold. My interviewer asked me if I applied to any others, and I said no, and he asked if I didn't get in what I would do. I told him that I would have the initial disappointment and some regrets. He just wrote something down. I would like to know what sort of effect this would have on the CCer's, on a person in general, and perhaps on an interviewer or admission officer. Anyone feel free to give me some input on it as this has been the subject of my thoughts for a couple of days now.

i think that it’d be good from an admissions standpoint because if they accepted you, they’d have an almost guaranteed yield from you.

from a CC point of view… don’t put all your eggs in one basket. however, if exeter’s the only place you’d be happy at, then stick with exeter, don’t apply to anywhere for the sake of applying.

best of luck!

I applied to only one school as well. I think their are some pros and some cons. On the good side, it shows the AOs that the applicant is really dedicated to the school, which is a good quality to have. My interviewer told me that they want to see kids who seriously live for this school. If that message came through, it can be a great thing for the admissions process!
However, there’s a bad side. I know applying to more schools will give you a greater chance of acceptance, and well, if march 10th comes and I am not accepted, I definitely will be heartbroken. I’m hoping for the best, and expecting the worst.
Good luck, I hope you get into Exeter!

It shows that you find the school such a great fit and it is a strong hook for you to get in. Yield is important to these schools and if the fit is high, the yield is high. I think it is a big plus if your other stats match the school’s average.

Thanks a lot, these comments are really setting me at ease. Phew… Now to wait for the 10th.

Agreed, it demonstrates decisiveness, and your answer to how you would handle potential rejection demonstrates maturity. I can only imagine that what the AO put down was a positive comment of some kind.

Only applying to one school is ok if you don’t mind returning to your local or current school if you don’t get accepted.
We didn’t have that option and applied to a range of schools for a hopeful acceptance.

I applied to only Exeter too. I’m not extremely nervous on whether I’ll get in though because if I get in, i’ll be happy; but if I don’t, I’ll just have to deal with it and live on.

I did the same exact thing! My interviewer asked the same thing and then after the little conversation ralf me to apply again if I didn’t get in. Should I be scared or is that a good sign?

My interviewer did not ask if I was applying to any other schools. Is this strange?

@PandaPandaa: The interviewer at just about every boarding school asks this.

It’s not wierd to apply to one school. I applied to only Exeter last year, got in, and now I go there. I think applying to one school shows where your heart is. You also don’t have to fill out too many forms!

Good Luck.
