I’m an international student wanting to apply to Medicine or Human Sciences at Oxford.
What would I need as an American student to apply?
Why are you now considering Oxford? What specifically about it outs it on your radar now?
The application requirements for both courses are laid out very neatly on the Oxford website.
Note that the testing / subject requirements specified are simply qualifiers: the BMAT (medicine) or TSA (HS) is critical to getting an invitation to interview and the interview is critical to getting an offer.
For medicine in particular: UK universities are limited in the number of international students that they can accept for medicine. Oxford is allowed to accept 14 students; in recent years they have accepted ~6. I have heard an Oxford admissions tutor say to a group of (international) potential applicants “if you think you are one of the top 1-2 applicants for medicine in the world go ahead and apply”.
ps: all the usual rules for applying to internships / residencies and qualifying to apply to practice medicine in the US will still apply.
Autocorrect above— what “puts” it on your radar?
Any course at Oxford is hard to get into, requiring scores of 5 in at least three APs. For Human Sciences it would be useful to have Bio and Calc BC as two of these. But I would only pursue this if you are really interested in sttudying HS and have decided against a medical career.
Medicine is MUCH MORE difficult for an international, to the point of almost impossible. You would need Chemistry as one of your APs, two other sciences (or one and math), relevant experience, and as noted above, there are very few places for internationals. There is one new medical chool in the UK (Buckinghamshire) which is specifically for internationals, but it won’t have the prestige of Oxford, and won’t help with US residencies. Going from any UK med school - even Oxford - to a residency in the US is also extremely hard.
If you are set on becoming a doctor in the US, also be aware that getting into med school in the US with an undergrad degree from abroad is also virtually impossible, as they tend to like your prerequisites to be undertaken at a US college.
It makes almost no sense for a US applicant to apply for medicine in the UK unless you plan to stay and practice there.
