I’m a junior currently thinking about applying to the Universit of Oxford for Medicine. By the time I apply, I’ll have AP Biology, APUSH, SAT IIs for Math, Chemistry, Biology and US history (hopefully 770+). My SAT score is 1530 (I might retake to get a higher score since my practice test average is 1580). At this point, what would my admission chances look like? I have some ECs related to this (Research Internship, published paper) and I could get a good rec letter from my teacher.
Is there anything I can do to improve my chances? What does Oxford look for in international students (Diversity, academics, test scores?)
Medicine is the very hardest for overseas applicants to get into, because places are heavily restricted. The last year for which stats are available they made 6 offers to internationals out of 342 applicants.
As Vicki says, what are your long term aims? Practice as a doctor in the UK, US or elsewhere?
As a minimum you’re going to need to be taking Chemistry AP and expecting a score of 5 in it as well as the Bio you will have in hand, and another hard science or Calc BC AP.
If you ask an Oxford rep directly their answer is “if you think that you are one of the 2-3 strongest candidates in the world go ahead and apply”.
Note that, in the year that Oxford accepted 6 international students, they were allowed to accept as many as 14*- but they didn’t find 14 amongst the 342 applicants that they wanted.
Sorry to stomp so hard on a dream.
*all UK public universities have a hard cap of 7.5% international students for med school
If you want to practice medicine in US after getting a MD, is there any difference between getting a degree from Oxford vs a MD degree from US universities?
@really123 An Oxford MD graduate would still be considered as a “foreign” medical school graduate which may put him at a disadvantage in getting a US residency.
Even for top top ranked medical school like Oxford? As a US student, is the chance for getting into Oxford medicine as negligible as discussed? Does anybody know someone who actually got accepted?
