Applying to Plan 2 and CS

I started my ApplyTexas app and realized that there was a chance I could be rejected from both of my selected majors. I have a good chance at both as I’m in-state, ranked top 2-3% in my class, and received a 35 on my ACT, but I also understand how competitive spots are. I have back-up selections (Physics and Sociology), but there’s no space for me to list that I intend to apply to either. Would I still be admitted to CNS/COLA as undeclared if I didn’t get into either major?

If you are rejected from both majors, you are allowed to select a major at the end of process from all majors that have open slots. It is a little like a lottery because they open it at a certain time and everybody is on line trying to get their slot. I do believe COLA always has room. Majors in CNS are less likely. You do have a good chance for both based on your stats. For Plan 2, the essays are extremely important.

Nobody should ever bank on being able to get into Plan II, but the bigger question is why anyone would apply to it without COLA as secondary… It’s certainly too late to worry about now, but even if CS or COLA didn’t accept you, it’s not an insurmountable issue for first-year students.

My daughter applied to Plan 2 as well as computer engineering. Actually I know several kids that applied to engineering and Plan 2 and completed both. Students may want both technical as well as liberal arts.

@GTAustin Are there usually spots open at the end of the admissions cycle in Physics and Sociology?

I would think there would be spots for Sociology. Physics would be less likely because it is a common second major for students trying to get into engineering.

@GTAustin Ah, thank you so much for all the info. It’s been very helpful!

This is what the Plan 2 Director instructed us to do. Pick CNS/CS as one selection. Pick COLA/Sociology as the other. When it asks you if you are interested in applying honors, select yes and Plan 2 will pop up and you do your application there. If selected, you can do Sociology/Plan 2 together or drop Soc and just do Plan 2. Her bottom line advice is don’t waste a major selection on plan 2. It’s too dicey. Pick a COLA major and apply via honors.
