My DS2 is applying to Plan II. He is not an auto-admit.
He has specified Computer Science as the first major. He has specified Economics (College of Liberal Arts) as the second major. He is going to submit the Plan II Honors app.
Here is the question: If he gets accepted into Computer Science, will Plan II still consider his application? Should we specify Plan II as his second major instead of Economics?
Yes, he can put Computer Science as his 1st choice and Economics as his 2nd choice and still be accepted to Plan II. There are other students who are double majoring in Computer Science & Plan II. My son had a similar situation and did not list Plan II as his first or second choice and was still accepted and enrolled in Plan II. All the same, it is best to call the Plan II office and confirm this information. They are very helpful and will be happy to take your call.
@bookmom7 Thanks for bringing up the topic of Dean’s Scholars and Turing Scholars.
DS2 is not planning to apply to Dean’s Scholars or Turing. He is applying for Plan 2 and LAH.
Ideally, he wants to do Plan 2 + Economics. If he does not get Plan 2, he wants to dual degree in Computer Science and Economics. If he does not get Plan 2 or Computer Science, he will go for Economics.
His stats are:
SAT: 2300 (CR: 800, Math: 780, Writing: 720)
Unweighted GPA: 3.86
IB Program
National Merit Semifinalist
In-state
Rank: Top 12% in a large, competitive Texas public school
If he ideally wants to do Plan II and Economics. Why not put Econ as a first choice and Plan II second? Though his fall-back of CS is one of the most competitive majors at UT for non-auto-admits, why not apply from a position of strength–he know what he wants, Econ/P2, so go for it! Make it happen. He looks good for Econ and LAH, and if he has that P2-ness, writes good essays, he is playing to win vs playing odds with which he has little control.
@EngPII Thanks for your post - it made me think and act. I discussed this topic with DS2 - he somehow does want to to keep Computer Science as first major.
I do have one question. If DS2 gets accepted into Computer Science, will he still be considered for LAH? If so, perhaps he can do major in CS + Economics with LAH.
From what I remember reading in the past, if you want Plan II, then you should put Plan II first (and Plan II wants to see that you put Plan II first!!). Also, there is no reason that CS will nullify your LAH application. They have every major in LAH. CS + ECON+LAH sounds terrific.
NO NO NO! ^^^^^^ info above from TxDad56 is incorrect! Check the Plan II website! They do NOT care if you put Plan II first and they advise quite the opposite if you are applying for another competitive program that does care. Neither of my two kids put Plan II first and both got in and enrolled. My son didn’t put Plan II in the first or even the second spot!
This is a direct quote from the Plan II website: " The College of Liberal Arts must be selected as one of the two college choices on ApplyTexas.org. Plan II Honors will appear as a major choice in the College of Liberal Arts major menu. You may note Plan II as a major choice or you may choose any other major in the College of Liberal Arts. Please note that Plan II/College of Liberal Arts DOES NOT need to be the first choice college."
We were advised by PII staff-and ultimately successful–in applying with Engineering as first choice, and Plan II as second choice. The acceptance from Plan II was two weeks after being accepted by Engineering.
@collegefind , glad you found that. My response was purely anecdotal. This is what was stated last year. I thought it seemed a bit arrogant but didn’t have history/info to the contrary.
