The common data set for Duke specifies that it is recommended that applicants complete three years of a foreign language. Would it put an applicant to the Pratt School of Engineering at a significant disadvantage if the applicant only completed two years of a foreign language?

I’m not sure if it’s a disadvantage, but I was accepted RD to Pratt and I only took 2 years of foreign language. It’s definitely better to take more than 2 years if you could.

silversoul,

I am asking for my son. He is hoping to only take two years of foreign language as he is not very interested in it and it is not AP in his high school (he might be more interested if his high school offered Asian languages rather than or in addition to European). He would rather take more AP science classes with the extra slots. So we are hoping to come up with a list of strong schools in STEM subjects that will accept kids with only two years of foreign language.

I dropped my regular foreign language class in order to take AP Physics. If your son loves those subjects more, definitely take them. I don’t think taking 2 years of foreign languages will significantly hurt his chances. But then I moved to US from Asia during middle school, so I already knew another language…someone else could probably be more helpful~

I think doing well in Science and Math APs will increase your chances more than just another year of foreign language. Pratt, unlike Trinity, doesn’t even have a foreign language requirement to graduate, so I don’t think it’s that important at all. I only had 2 years of foreign language and I got in.

Thanks for the input guys. We are moving closer to putting a Duke visit on our summer itinerary. It is an impressive school and it is encouraging that the three year foreign language recommendation does not appear to apply strictly with regard to applications to Pratt.
