Is it possible to apply for undergraduate admission to Stern, but to identify the college of arts and sciences, as a backup,so that if the student is not admitted to Stern, then she would be considered for admission to the college of arts and sciences?
NYU does not allow CAS for backup for Stern applicants.
Not that the reason for this really matters (it is what it is), but I wonder why they do not allow this. I would think the “second choice” of many Stern applicants would be CAS, and that there would be a fair number of strong applicants who are qualified for admission into CAS but do not quite make the cut for Stern.
you can choose LS as a back up id not admitted and then apply for an early transfer into either stern or cas
What about SPS as a backup? What’s SPS reputation like? Is it a second class “trade school” type reputation, or is it credible and well respected in the same way that, say, CAS is?
I assume transfer to Stern from another NYU school is exceptionally competitive?
The reason is probably that CAS doesn’t want a whole bunch of people who only have it as a second choice and will try to transfer out ASAP.
I would see potentially a problem with a backup assuming your “why NYU” essay will be beautifully tailored to Stern -
There’s a thread from last year about stern transfers. I think the dude said a hundred or so transfer in every year, but around the same amount transfer out to schools like Wharton so that the class size stays about the same.
If I really wanted to go to business school as an undergrad (as opposed to “attend nyu’), I don’t think I’d take a backup school at NYU hoping to transfer to stern. What if you never get it? Surely better to go to business school elsewhere and try transfer in from there, if you don’t get in at least you’re still in business school. If you’d rather be in a different school at NYU than business school elsewhere, that’s different.
