My goal is Stern. Would applying to CAS and transferring internally (if I get in) make sense?

I can share stats if anyone cares. The 4.8% acceptance rate (according to NYU’s website) is leading me to believe that my only realistic chance of getting into Stern is via an internal transfer. Is that correct or would it make more sense just to apply directly to Stern?

i would say to still put stern as your first choice, with cas as your backup

Stern website lists 11% acceptance rate? (Although the mean SAT looks low so this may be a bit outdated?) http://www.stern.nyu.edu/programs-admissions/undergraduate/why-stern/numbers#admissions

Transferring into Stern is also competitive. Would you be happy to remain in CAS if your transfer request is turned down? Would it make more sense to apply for business school elsewhere as a backup rather than potentially get stuck in a college you don’t want to be in? (Genuine question, I don’t know your specific interest, it’s possible that CAS will work better for you than business school elsewhere).

@aves2023 , I believe you can’t put CAS as backup for Stern.

That is hardly an original idea. Colleges are wise to the game of people applying to a less competitive school and then trying to transfer into a more competitive school within the university. So while it is possible to do an internal transfer to Stern admissions as an internal transfer would be very competitive and you cannot count on it working out. IMO if you apply to CAS as a freshman you should expect to spend your 4 undergraduate years in that school. Would you be happy doing that?

OP, you should apply to the school you want to attend. If it’s Stern, then apply to Stern.
