Applying to UCLA! Chances?

...how good my chances are of getting? I know there's no definite way to determine whether or not I'll be accepted, but I feel that hearing from actual UCLA students would help give me a idea at least. :)

Stats:

Weighted GPA: 4.7 (currently but will be raised because I'm taking 3 more AP classes this year)

Unweighted GPA: 3.8 or higher (have to check)

Currently ranked number 8 in a class of about 550 (I think; I'd need to check)

I've taken all honors (except classes like Spanish where you can't take honors at my school) and by the time I graduate, I will have taken 6 AP classes (including taken AP Senior English [or AP English Literature] in my sophomore year.) I've gotten 5's on all my AP tests so far as well.

Finally, my SAT score was 800 Writing, 740 Critical Reading, and 600 Math (overall, 2140).

I think that's about it. I feel I may be forgetting something, but...anyway, I'd really appreciate any feedback about my chances of getting in and any advice you have to offer! Thank you so much for your time. :D

You may, get in, you may not… It would be better on your SAT to have gotton 710’s across the board than a perfect score and a lousy math score…

You can’t really have a 4.7 weighted GPA, unless your school weights honors classes as well, but even then. How are you calculating this?

^No, they don’t weight honors, just AP. I took AP English Literature sophomore year, AP English Language and AP US History junior year, got A’s in all of them…All I can say is that it says “4.7” on my transcript.

The 600 in math is unfortunate. I don’t know what your SAT II scores are, but anything in the 700s would probably do. I would say you have a decent shot, especially if you’re a California resident.

I agree with binks09 in that I don’t know how you could have a 4.7 GPA if honors courses aren’t weighted. I’ve taken 10 AP classes with a B in one class and my GPA isn’t even a 4.6.

My SAT II U.S. History was 710, and I’m taking the Literature one in October. And I am a California resident. :)

I’m not sure how unfortunate it is that I got a 600 math since–in the applicant stats–several people had 500s-range on two of their categories, maybe low 700-range on one, some with a lower unweighted GPA than I have OR low/mid 600s on all their categories with a lower GPA than mine, and they still got accepted.

Actually, I double-checked and saw that since my school became a charter school last year, they now do weight honors courses. Is that a hindrance to getting accepted or does it not matter?

Sorry, but somehow there is some-sort of miscommunication. What hs do you go to? Your administration is full of it. I know for a FACT I lost out on so many scholarships because of stupid things like this. People with lower grades overall, somehow have 4.5+ written on their transcript. Its crap. People, especially people wanting to go to UCLA, should know how to calculate their GPA by hand and realize it is crap.

I took 5 AP’s as in every high school class attempted, and ended up with a 4.22 or something.

You most likely have something just over a 4.0

I think the GPA is possible. For instance, let’s say they were taking five classes, all of which were weighted courses and got an A in all of them except once, which was a B. The unweighted GPA would be a 3.8 and weighted would be a 4.8. So based on this, I’m guessing that getting an unweighted 3.8 and weighted 4.7 could happen. But who knows.
You’d have to kno their grades to be sure.

I’ve gotten A’s in all my classes except one term of Honors Chemistry (one term got an A, second term got a B, but it’s weighted because it’s an honors course) and Honors Algebra II (I got a B in both terms, but again, it’s weighted because it’s an honors course.)

math SAT is ok, but you may want to take math level II just to show that you are proficient (though this applies more if you’re applying to school of engineering)

focus more on your personal statements, emphasize your film experience and ECs so you can stand out against everyone who did CSF/NHS…

Sugah… ***???

Who takes 5 classes in high school… of course his TERM or SEMESTER GPA could be a 4.7, but not overall. Most terms I had a 4.5-4.75, but because of my lower division classes (9-10 grade, it would pull it down to that 4.22 level.

Eiffel, are you sure you aren’t referring to your Term or Semester Grade? My school put these on our report cards that were mailed home, but to see the overall GPA, you had to get a transcript.

Ah, I see. Okay, it says my overall GPA is 4.63, so about one point difference, but I think it will be raised this year overall due to my taking three more AP classes this year. Also, there are two honors courses I took that my counselor recorded down as regular by accident (fixing it this week), so it could be closer to 4.7 right now once I get that fixed.

Could you perhaps put up your calculated UC GPA (weight&unweighted)?

(look under " Grade Point Average ")

I’m still smelling bs./

I realize they wouldn’t be taking five courses overall, but I’m saying if they managed to maintain that semester grade throughout high school, then their overall GPA would resemble it. I’m sorry if I’m totally off on thinking this.

There isn’t a place for unusual hobbies but singing or writing really aren’t unusual hobbies… at least not IMO.

Your GPA for UC’s is capped at 8 AP/honors semester, I believe (correct me if I’m wrong), and only soph and junior grades are taken into account. It doesn’t matter what your gpa will be this year anyway. Make sure your school’s honors classes are approved by the UC’s:

I know some of mine weren’t and that brought my weighted GPA down a bit.

It’d come down to your essays, but I think you have a shot.

Obviously the school weights honors. Otherwise the gap between weighted and unweighted (0.8) would mean that 80% of the OP’s classes were AP. Since they seem to have taken 3 AP classes, that would mean they’ve taken one other class.

^I already said that I found out they DO weight honors since last year because it became a charter school.

@taintedk: I think writing in the way I have (creating a television program and writing over fifteen full-length teleplays for it, at least seven novellas, at least five short stories, one in-progress novel, one play, and on and on) is certainly unusual. I’ll list my hobbies as extracurriculars instead. Anyway, thanks for saying I have a shot.

And I’ll calculate the UC GPA once my counselor fixes my report; I’m not sure if Honors credit is given to the Physics course or not, so I have to check. But anyway, are you saying that they don’t even look at freshmen or senior year? Or that they for some reason just don’t add them to one’s GPA?

I don’t know why you think it’s BS, binks. It’s what it says on my transcript; what motive would I have to come to this board and make up some random GPA on my UCLA chance thread? Wouldn’t really give me an accurate measurement of my chances if I made it up, now would it?

I Never said you were lying, I ACTUALLY INFERRED that you were mis-interpreting/misreading your term/semester GPA and replacing that for your true GPA.

A 4.7 means that, assuming you get all A’s, 70%, 70%, once again, 70% of you classes are AP.

^BS seems to imply purposeful skewing of the truth more than ignorance, but all right. And I see where it clearly says “overall GPA” (yes, in a different section than the term/semester GPA)…and it says 4.625. But like I said, my school now DOES weight honors courses, so yeah…at least 70% of my classes have been honors. The only two that haven’t been honors were Spanish 1/2 and Art 1/2. Don’t really know what else to tell you. Sorry. :-/

What’s this original television series you are writing for called?
