Is it a negative? If not a negative, would it still be better to just put down a major that you somewhat can see yourself in? I'm applying EA if that means anything.

It’s fine to apply undecided. Colleges know that most students, even those who thought they were decided as college seniors, change their majors at least once during college.

It is easy for Yale to look back on the intended majors declared on the applications and see how well they correlate with the actual majors chosen. The correlation is very poor and a minority of students stick with what they put on the application. How many high school kids have ever been exposed to anthropology, linguistics, geology, etc.? I don’t even know why they ask that stuff and I’m sure applicants obsess about whether they will have a better admissions shot by saying they will major in something obscure or be hurt by saying they want to be a history major. In the interests of assembling a diverse class, you can’t change your skin color or socioeconomic class on admission so those are factors I understand them considering. Not so with intended major. Don’t sweat it. FWIW, my son wrote undecided major on the application form, was admitted, and I never questioned whether that was an unwise thing to do.
