Applying under a less competitive major

I ve heard many people advise me to apply under a less competitive major just to get into a school then switch to the more competitive major. So here’s what I m planning to do. Plz comment on if this is viable.

I m gonna apply to UCSD in the fall. I think I have a decent chance. I self-evaluated myself and got around a 7700 on the comprehensive review. I am an in state applicant. LAst year our of state cut off was about 7500 and instate was 7400ish.

So I like math and bio. But I cant decide. Right now, I like math more than bio but that can change in a matter of days. So here’s what I m trying to do. I’ll apply as a math major. then switch to a bio major. Is this feasible?

um as long as the school lets you change majors easily you are fine. however, you are overstressing about getting in, it wont matter.

Just for anyone else who reads this, don't consider it an admissions strategy. You can't apply to schools as an English major and switch to Engineering. You can't apply to UPenn as a Communications major and then switch to Wharton school of business.

When you apply to a school, you apply to a specific college within the university. For example, you might apply to Arts and Sciences or you might apply to the Engineering College. Switching between colleges within a uni is not automatic, especially when the department is prestigious.

However, I can't imagine that they will care about someone switching between math and bio. I doubt if it will affect your admission either.

I m sorry if I confused you guys. I like math and bio. I cant decide between either. So I was just asking since it is unlikely that I will be able to decide even by 2007, I just wondered which one I should apply by. Is math less competitive than bio? If yes, will it affect my chances of admission (you guys already answered this question)

Oh and which of the UCs have a good math program?

math - berkeley
