Appointment

How early is too early to try and get an appointment from a congressman? I am in 10th grade… When should I start, what should I do, who should I contact… My school is having Military day March 9, maybe some people from the academy will be there, I can ask them as well.

An appointment is not the same as a nomination. You get a nomination from a congressman, and only if you have a nomination can you get an appointment to go to the academy (theres a lot there, read carefully).

You can only get a nomination the year you are applying, no sooner.

Ah yes, I meant nomination, sorry. So do I have to wait for my Junior year to begin before I apply for a nomination?

It depends on which source you are applying to.

Go to your congressman's webpage and find out.

How would I find my congressman's website? I live in Long Island NY by the way.

Just go to google and type in his/her name. They should have information on there (under constituent services usually).

gglock08 , i am a freshman in high school, what i suggest you do is follow this timeline,
*spring of junior year- send in a postcard for your pre-candidate questionnaire. The postcard can be found inside a USAF Academy catalogue, which your guidance counselor or high school library should have. You can also go online to complete it at http://admissions.usafa.af.mil/. Assuming you pass it, you will receive a letter indicating that you a now a candidate, as well as the full-fledged application.
*End of Junior Year - Congressional Nomination
Write to your congressman and two state Senators to get an application for a nomination to a service academy. Example letters can be found in the USAFA catalogue. The applications are usually due in the early Fall, so you should give yourself the whole summer to complete it. The nomination is critical to you getting into the Academy, so take special care in making sure this application is perfect.
**Fall of Senior Year - Congressional Nomination/USAFA Application
As with most colleges, the application will be due sometime in the fall. Ensure both your application for a Congressional Nomination and your application to the USAF Academy are submitted with plenty of time to spare.

thats about all i know, do research on the interenet, find out whatever neccasary, its best to go the academy website and get the pre-candidate booklet or whatever that gives you a wealth of info, u can get this by going to the academy website and filling out an application, dont fill it out cause your too young, just go to the page of the application and download the booklet.

Thanks for the info, i'll try that out.
