Appropriate attire for the Pres. Schol. football game?

I'm going to the President's Scholarship event thing at the GT-Duke game next Saturday, want to know what I should wear. Neither the invitation nor the registration details say anything about what you should wear, so I'm assuming that they're not expecting you to put effort in (along with the fact that it's a college football game, so more reasons to assume that it's casual).

Unless I get contrary information, I'm planning on wearing a GT hoodie and basketball shorts to the PSP event. Is that okay, and won't look bad?

You are smart to ask. Think who might be there to meet you: the program director, some of the current President’s Scholars (who probably know the director to varying degrees), other candidates, some alumni, etc. Are any of these people on whom you want to make a positive impression? Any you expect to meet again soon? I think I would want to wear something nicer than ‘basketball shorts’. Would you wear basketball shorts on a date? The hoodie (if not worn [out]) is probably okay. Maybe khakis/slacks and real shoes (not sneakers/trainers).

If ever in doubt for a social event, it is fine to call your host and inquire about what would be proper attire.

Gaahhh I hate being a socially awkward penguin sometimes. I hate etiquette so much, why can’t we all just be comfortable. Social norms suuuuuuck. Oh well, thanks for the help. I feel like khakis might be pushing it a little bit, I’ll probably wear jeans, I guess. That’s not terrible.

Surely they know that they’re dealing with future Georgia Tech students, and accordingly need their hand held a little bit on these social matters? Lol. I’d kill for a clothing guideline in that email.

Just so you know, there are plenty of people at these games in very formal attire, including jackets and ties/bow ties. Now, I’m not at all suggesting you show up in formal attire, but I would second GPBurdell32 and suggest khakis and non-sneaker shoes as a safe bet. Your attire is not going to make or break your chances of PS (this game is really more to let people learn about Tech and the PS program than to select semi-finalists anyway.) However, showing up looking like you don’t care will likely be noted.

As for social norms: Whatever your opinion on them, they exist, and a lot of people throughout your life who will have a say in your future will likely care about them, so it might be best to put aside your distaste for them from time to time.

Also, if you are really that uncertain, please feel free to call the PS office. They will be more than willing to answer any questions you have about the event.

As above, khakis are good. I’d go for gold instead of blues since the opposing team is blue  just don’t wear red whatever you do!

rickdust8, you’re ahead of me, in thinking to ask ahead of time. I didn’t ask about attire before I went to GT for my PS interview (finalist weekend), but I wish I had. I was the only one wearing a sweater and slacks. Coat and tie would have been a much better call for that event. ;-)
