April 13th Auditions at Montclair State

I posted this in the MSU forum, but wanted to check here too. My S was invited to audition at MSU, but due to schedule conflicts the ONLY option for him would be April 13th. Just wondering if there is even any point, given the 500 or so that audition between Unifieds and the school auditions. It seems like everything would be filled already. This is not a critical school for us, but wouldn’t be bad if he got in. However, paying an audition fee and spending another day driving and auditioning if there is absolutely no point also seems a waste of time and money. Does anyone know of anyone who got accepted auditioning so late?

Never heard of such late auditions, perhaps they are still trying to fill the class?

In my opinion, a school would not bother holding auditions if they had no slots available. It is a very late audition date, but it may be worth going to if he is interested in the school.

Montclair has a late audition every year.

I see your S has been accepted to DeSales. Has he heard from any other programs yet? April 13th is a late date for auditions. Most auditioned programs will have sent their notifications by April 1st to allow students to make their commitment by the national May 1st declaration date. Montclair requests students who’ve received an acceptance to their BFA programs to notify them of their decision no later than March 30th. They already have a deferral list to go to based on past audition dates. They may still be looking to fill a particular gender/type/vocal range to complete their class if they haven’t seen it at the dates they’ve already held. Your S may potentially fit their need, or he may not; it’s hard too say, too many factors involved.

Hopefully, he’ll have plenty of options by April 1st. You and he can then decide if it’s worth the trip/expense. I’m guessing you’re instate by your screen name. MSU is certainly an affordable option, but depending on scholarship/finaid offers, you may find OOS of state could be just as affordable.

Congrats to your S on DeSales!

Several schools have late auditions and people do get in that way. I know 2 last year who were not accepted anywhere (or anywhere they liked) in the regular cycle and did the late auditions and got in.

He has only been accepted into DeSales so far. We are not going for some of the bigger schools, and we are tending to lean away from BFA because he also wants to double major in something a bit more practical for a job back-up. He also wants to stay pretty close (3 hours or so) to home and not in NYC.

We are actually in CT, but I am from NJ. Western Connecticut State is probably our cheapest option - and very close to where we live, but haven’t heard from them yet (probably 2 more weeks).

We just got back from Rhode Island College where he auditioned today. The students all said he was a definite because of his type. Apparently they need tall, dark, manly bass/baritones there. All they have is smaller tenors. But of course it’s not up to the students. Guess we will see.

Still pondering MSU, but it seems like they would already have all their slots filled and would only offer to maybe one or two and go over their limit if the person was truly amazing.

njmissy13, if it was possible and not too stressful, I would go to the audition. You really never know until you go, and Montclair is a great option for your son. They really do not over accept, so he may just be exactly who they were waiting for…

Since we have a discussion on Monclair do they have a Senior Showcase?

Yes, Montclair has a Senior Showcase.

Does anyone have any info about the quality of the Acting BFA at MSU? A few of the current freshman suggested that the program was revamped this year to mirror conservatory programs with voice, dance and acting sequences but would love to hear more if anyone has info.

Not sure if we should start a thread that is titled properly, but I am also interested in hearing from anyone with knowledge about Montclair’s current MT program. Either a student or parent who knows what the program is like? Anyone? Thanks.
