April 2011 ACT Writing Discussion

Social issues? D8>

Hahahaha, no, I used it to relate about how we discussed Swift’s piece in class and how our teacher’s insight was more sophisticated and yadda yadda.

What does 3 full pages, 5-paragraph structure with a very good intro/thesis and okayish but rushed conclusion approximately get you (all else ignored)?

^ about a 10 from personal experience

I’ve never done an ACT writing and I thought that was extremely easy.

Used Albert Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiment, historians’ attempts to piece together history in the most unbiased way + propaganda during WWII, as well as a made up story about my health teacher going on a 40 minute tangent against stem-cell research and reducing 7 girls to tears.

3.5 pages, was $$$

I wrote 6 complete paragraphs-page 4. I said “Yes” and example 1: knowledge about currents issues example 2. further improve problem solving skills. 3. leadership and potential to succeed in the future in means of possess leadership and lead new worlds to better and ideal society, not earn money and fame. example4. contradiction to the people who believe some students are reluctant-I proposed new idea and rules for fairness and better discussion so that I contradict that idea and wrote about more benefits. Conclusion: including future prediction, overall summary. Also, in my paragraph, I included my personal story(not made…real)-discussion about Egypt and Libya associating leadership. Also, I wrote about industrial revolution in United States and showed that greedy and selfish people ultimately cause great depression which implies the importance of discussion and proposal of new ideas to make world better. I got 10 out of 12 last time(I wrote just 4 paragraphs and did not use time wisely) I feel like getting 12. Today ACT is the easiest test I ever taken. Science was extremely easy.(I solved all problems in 25 minutes and I think I got one wrong)…English was easy and Math was extremely easy. Reading was average or easier than ever.

;_; The length thing applies to the ACTs too?! I should’ve written larger, then. My handwriting is tiny, and I could’ve easily filled at least three pages if I did.

I’m one of the slowest writers ever, so I struggled to finish on time, as usual. My logic is there, but I wish I had more time to think through the diction and explain things more clearly.

I only wrote two pages
i didnt like the topic

Also, how does the essay affect your overall score? Im new to the ACT so i was wondering if its like the SAT…where they combine the multiple choice with the essay. Or is it difderent?

@statlanta, Yes, that’s why I chose that point to refute.

Ok this is what I did:
3 pages. My specific examples all related to one topic…well they all had to do with my personal experience with how my social studies teacher behaved during the 2008 election. I related everything back to that. I had a thesis at the end of paragraph 1, with 4 other paragraphs. I had a paragraph on the opposite side, and then I had two paragrpahs for my point (yes)?

What will that give me?

At laptop1, the essay on the ACT does NOT effect your composite score at all, rather it is combined with your English score to give you a better English score

Oh gosh, I only wrote 2 pages, I wrote that teachers should not be allowed to express their opinions, only wrote like 4 paragraphs plus an intro and conclusion

@Archdukefranz
so the essay only helps your score then?

LoL I used Thomas Paine’s famous line, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” to support my freedom of speech reasoning.

No, combining the essay and english doesn’t give you a better score if your essay score is lower than your english score. It is basically an average of the two. Colleges probably don’t look at that combined score anyway, and it doesn’t factor into the composite.

^ Colleges that require the ACT +Writing probably do look at the combined score, otherwise they wouldn’t require the +Writing.

Ooh…I didn’t really have a paragraph on counter argument at all, but I did try to demolish opposing views in my example paragraphs. My writing was pretty strong, will that hurt me?

I’m kind of worried about my essay - I misread the topic initially and basically wrote 3 pages saying that students should be able to express themselves in the classroom. In the last 2 minutes, I realized what I had done, and tried to edit my essay to say that teachers should be able to express themselves as it increases the quality of class discussion. I included a weak counterargument in my intro - what score do you guys think I’ll get?

How do you guys have time to write 4 pages??? I could barely finish 3…

Try writing more quickly.
