April

Hey! So I heard/read that in April we get to talk to our academic advisers. Can anyone tell me what goes down? Do you just tell your adviser about your academic goals and what classes you want to take first semester?

That reminds me, have any admits already been thinking about what classes to take first semester? For those who are not incoming freshman, any suggestions? I know I'm taking Econ 102 and Math 104 for sure, but don't know about others yet. Alrighty, Thanks! :)

PS: I'm soo excited!!! :) :) :)

Oooh! I forgot to talk about housing. So basically in April we rank our preferences for different houses and wait to be notified (when by the way??) which house we ultimately get into? If we get into a double, how do we figure out our roommate? Is it all random? Are the Penn housing ppl competent at matching us with compatible ppl? Also…how hard is it to get a single?? Thanks!~

Yeah basically you’ll email/call/meet your adviser (depending on what is more convenient for you) and just talk about your goals, what classes you’re planning on taking in the fall, etc. I think advanced registration isn’t until the summer for freshmen (I want to say July) so you’ve got lots of time to figure out what you want to take and get in touch with your adviser (I don’t think I heard from my adviser until June-ish?)

I would advise against pushing yourself too hard and loading up on difficult courses (e.g. most advisers will discourage you from taking 2+ science course in your first semester; unless you are very strong in science, this is probably good advice to follow). Yes you are probably used to taking all honors/advanced classes, yes you are probably good at managing time, etc. but the transition between high school and college does take time to get used to, and I know some of my friends struggled because they were too ambitious, and their GPAs suffered.

Housing notifications come out around June/July if I remember correctly (deadline to apply is May 1 I think) Then you’ll get an email and letter with information about your housing, roommates if applicable, etc. You can request a roommate (and that person will have to request you); I know last year there were roommate surveys on the Class of 2012 Facebook group. Otherwise you’ll just be randomly assigned a roommate. Sometimes the roommate pairings work out, sometimes they don’t (I get along well with all my roommates and we were randomly assigned, but one of my friend is having a heck of a time with one of her roommates) They say singles are harder to come by, but there are quite a few of them in the Quad/Hill/Stouffer (and maybe Gregory/Dubois?) so take it for what you will.

thanks CDN_dancer for your help! I have another question: Do you think it’s possible to double major and double minor?? Is that too crazy? I’m having a heck of a time narrowing down my interests because there’s so many great majors/minors! I’m definitely majoring in history and econ but uhh I love philosophy and literature and… math… any suggestions? Also, I want to be able to fit in perhaps 2/3 wharton classes. I’m in College btw. Help?
