my prep school only offers AP chem this year, and who knows about AP's in the future because the science teachers (2) are both retiring! I am however taking the AP History and the AP English exam this year, although our school doesn't have advanced/AP for either of those courses.

"At my Daughter's school, in order to take an AP class, you have to achieve a 95 or higher the ENTIRE previous year in the prerequisite class. In other words, over 4 quarters, if you get three 98s and then a 94, you cannot take the AP class next year. Does anyone else have such stringent requirements? Consequently, even though D got low As in all her classes, she could not take any APs the next year. Seems so unfair."

It sounds strict, but not necessarily unfair. In many AP classes an 'anybody can enroll policy' really slows down the teaching speed. Our school employs that policy, as a result an AP Calc BC class was never implemented here. The 'math' kids just kind of stuck out in back and talked about world of warcraft in pure boredom while the rest of the class went over chain rule for the 40th time.

And its not like she cant take AP exams, she just might have to do some outside studying.

Soph(now):
None offered

Junior:
AP French Language
AP US History

Sr:
AP English Lit
AP Chem
AP US Gov
AP French Literature
(most likely wont take AP Calc, but rather honors, AP is notoriously impossible at my school)

10th grade:
AP European History (3)

11th grade (now):
AP Biology
AP U.S. History

12th grade:
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
AP French Language
(maybe, I don't really like French, but I heard that doing 4 years of foreign language in HS really impresses colleges, is this true?)

i wouldnt say it really impresses them if you do, they kind of just expect it.

10th- AP US History
11th- AP Biology, AP French Language, AP Government, AP English Language
12th- AP English Literature, AP European History, AP Pyschology, AP Calculus AB

=9 Total

^^ So GreenDay Fan you are saying that I definately better take AP Fench Language then?

9 total AP, + 1 IB SL

i wouldnt say definitely..its just that most applicants do. if you had a good reason, it wouldnt be a huge deal. I'm just saying that 4 years of a language wouldnt be super impressive to colleges, it'd be the same as taking 4 years of math, science, or something else. its just...what happens. lol. if you take another AP class in place of french, it most likely wouldnt bother adcoms.

10th:
AP World History

11th:
APUSH
APSTAT
APLANG

12th:
APMACRO
APMICRO
APEURO
APCALC AB
APBIO
APLIT
APENV

11 TOTAL

Seiken: yes, she can sit for the exams. But for higher tier schools, it looks pretty bad if you haven't taken any AP classes even though you got all 90 through 94s in your classes.

Since I probably won't even go to the US for colleges, I've decided not to take US Gov't or US History, and concentrate on the other 5 exams that I'm taking next year, English Language, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Comp. Gov't. I would still end up with 10 AP's, which is quite a lot compared to what a lot of people in my school take.

10th:
US Government

11th:
Language and Composition
US History

12th:
Calc AB
Macroeconomics
Literature
Chemistry

My school is small, only about 500 people, but extremely competitive (public school with a few thousand applicants for each spot in the freshman class, you have to take tests and apply to get in) and all classes are honors weighted. You can only take science APs if you concentrate in science. (you have to pick a concentration, called a major, junior year.) My school offers AP Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Environmental Science. The only other APs are Spanish Language, U.S. Government, and English Literature, and as of this year AP Calc and European History. They make it very difficult to take AP classes -- AP Gov and Art History are only offered during lunchtime and AP Euro and Spanish are only offered after school. They also limit many classes to only seniors (Calc, Spanish, English, Gov, Chem, Physics) and let you only take one science AP at a time.

To take AP English, you must be recommended by your junior year English teacher and take an online prep course and get at least an 85 in it if you don't have a cum 95 average in ALL of your classes. I don't think this is fair because math and science have nothing to do with English; as such, I shouldn't be forced to take an extra English class just because I don't do well in Chemistry.

Also this year they are offering Art History; the curriculum is AP but it's not listed as AP on my schedule because college board doesn't evaluate courses until January.

So I only took English and Art History. Oh well.

It's ALL about AP Art History; that was definitely my favorite class out of all others I have taken.

Technically I only took nine AP classes and got A's in every one of them
AP Biology
AP English
AP US History
AP European History
AP Art History
AP Calculus
AP Constitution/US Government
AP Economics

But I took the AP French Language exam and got a 4 on it, so I pretty much have about ten under my belt.

My D's course load

Have taken
10th: AP Euro, AP Calc BC, AP Comp Sc AB, AP Chemistry (4)

For sure taking next year :
11th: AP Biology, AP US History, AP English language (3)
Will take
AP Physics C: if score > 4 on AP Calc BC. (2/1)
AP Physics B: otherwise
Debating taking in 11th or 12th
AP Statistics or Multivariate Calc (Post AP) /Differential Equation (Post AP) (1)

For sure
12th: AP English Literature, AP Pyschology or AP Microeconomics/ AP Macroeconomics (2)

So total of 4 + 5(6) + 2 = 11/12.

She has AP Environmental Sciences on her radar but has not decided when.
She will also be taking 6 semester of post AP classes.

Requirement to take AP at my D's school is to score B+ or above in Hons. prerequists or A- or above in Regular pre-requists.

School offer every AP.

kingkouture : What were your Scores on AP Exams (not school grades)?

11th grade:
AP English Lang & Comp
AP Latin V
AP Euro Hist
AP French Lang

12th grade:
AP English Lit
AP Latin C/O
AP US Hist
AP French Lit
AP German Lang
AP Music Theory

Zero. I win!

These are insane numbers of AP courses. Makes me wonder if other schools make you work as hard as mine. There is NO WAY you could have a life with taking all those AP's. No time for EC at all... our school suggests 5-6 max. The work load is HUGE. Makes me wonder where all of you with these insane numbers of AP's got in to college?....do tell....
