APUSH DBQs and FRQs

Hey yall.
The exam is Fri, and I have not written any FRQ in my entire life. I've only written about 3 DBQs (with notes on all of them).

What is the usual time limit for all three of them? And how do you suggest breaking the time up?

I'm in AP Lang as well, so I'm capable of writing a lot within a certain period of time.
Also, When writing the DBQs and FRQs, do we to take a stance (Agree, qualify, disagree) on the topic?

Thanks a lot!

you get about an hour for the dbq, with 15 min required prepare time. you get 70 minutes for TWO frqs, 5 min prepare time each. It is an argumentative essay. Meaning, you must take a stance. However, you can take a stance, and argue why the other side is wrong, or why there is a grey area in the argument. Test makers like this, because it shows that you really know how to think outside the box.

I generally find that you take a serious position, however, you insert a caveat–a caveat generally created by DISSENTING documents provided from the packet (generally, they don’t give you a series of documents that all agree with one another).

For the FRQs, just remember that it’s not a full-fledged essay. What’s essential is to answer the question.

I feel that there is not enough time to develop as complicated of a thesis as I would like (or as the DBQ). Generally you pick a stance, through a LOT of supporting historical facts in about it, but MAKE SURE to acknowledge the opposing side of the argument. As in, tell people, what a common opposing argument against your essay is/was. This way, even if your thesis isn’t complicated, you’ve 1) expanded the world view of the essay and 2) fulfilled a mandate by the test takers (Remember, College Board provides the documents for the DBQ, THEY chose to give you dissenting documents, meaning they want to hear about TWO views, not one).

Thanks yall. So all three Essays (DBQ and FRQ x2) are argumentative essays?

Yes. The APUSH is not a regurgitation of facts.

I only hope he’s joking…?

That IS what APUSH is.

You regurgitate facts, but in essays, you explain what those facts mean. It’s nothing more complicated than that.
