APUSH: Go or No ?

I’m thinking about my schedule for next year and the class I keep continually pivoting on is APUSH. Around my school APUSH has the reputation of being a “GPA Killer” & a “Time Killer”. I’ve heard nothing good about the course, and only about two people have said anything positive to me about it. However, I do have an interest in the social sciences (just for curiosity, not a potential career) and think I should know more American history.

My schedule for next year (junior year) currently looks like this:
1 AP Lang
2 AP Stats
3 Pre-calc
4 AP Environmental
5 TV Productions
6 AP Art History/ AP Psych (Whichever fits)
7 APUSH ???

I don’t want to make a mistake and regret the course, but at the same time I don’t want to miss out on a good opportunity. I also (regretfully) passed on taking AP Human Geo my freshman year and don’t want to seem like a wimp to college admins. I’m definitely taking AP US Gov senior year, so I’m not sure if there will be any overlapping info. Any thoughts ?

Go for it, and get Larry Krieger’s book for the AP exam (all you will need) as well as the AMSCO book for tests in class. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t think I will be taking APUSH - I think that course along with my others may be too much. I also realized the college credit would be of no benefit to me later on, so I think it would be an undue burden.

I would pick either APUSH or AP Art History. Obviously APUSH is the harder of the two, but both require that you do a lot of memorization, it will be easier on you to pick one or the other.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely be taking AP Art History. My college of choice gives two different credits for it! I think it will be an interesting complement to world history and I’ll have more time to focus on that class. I only wish I had taken it this year along with world… but I guess you win some and lose some.

You’ve already made up your kind, but I think you should take apush, Its way more challenging than any of those APs you plan on taking, Honestly art history over apush is bs, who cares if your cumulative gpa is .01 lower, its a rewarding experience.

Either you take it now and get it out of the way or you take it in college.

Better to get it done now. Yes, it is hard but well worth it.

@Saminator910 My only concern is the workload; I know that it is “possible” to take 5 ap’s but I don’t think I’ll be succesful in all my courses if I pile that much work on. Also, an important thing to me is the credits I’ll be receiving for those courses. I have a surplus of social science/humanities credits, whereas I’d be getting social science AND international credits with APAH, but I wouldn’t be getting international credits anywhere else.

@AshleySmith I would already have met my social science and humanities gen ed requirements without that course, and US history isn’t required so I wouldn’t have to take it in college. At this point I’m most worried about being successful in my courses and being sure that they’ll help me out later on in life, and I just think APUSH won’t do that for me right now.
