APUSH- movie Glory & importance of black Union regiments

To those who have seen the movie "Glory" or to anyone interested in American history, I would like to hear your response to this question:

How essential was the black soldier's involvement in the war to the Union's success and was it more important to the Union or to the black soldier that he had fought?

I have already formulated my own response but I am interested in other ideas. Please enlighten me.

I think its more important to the blacks, because even if they didnt join the war. the union still gonna win. but if they do, they become part of union and later will be respected by the union.

:)
