I know this is pretty early, but next year for my junior year, the minimum of AP’s I would take is 2. I want to take 3, and I already know 2 that I plan on taking, but I’m not sure which one I should choose between AP United States History and AP English Language and Composition, or if I should take both. I don’t want to take the one that’s too demanding because I’m doing several things next year. To anyone who has taken them, which is inherently more demanding, or how hard are they on a scale from 1 to 10. To give you some context, this would be my schedule next year:
Academics:
AP Psychology (this is widely considered as one of the easy AP’s, but not at my school)
AP French
AP Lang
or/and?
APUSH
Spanish 11
Calculus (kind of advanced b/c I’m taking it ahead of time)
Honor Societies:
National Honor Society
French National Honor Society (running for Secretary or VP)
Tri-M Music Honor Society (running for Treasurer)
Other:
Community Service
I’d take both. If you want to cut back, I’d cut back AP Psych. While it may be overly demanding at your school, at most HS’s it is not, and colleges may view it as less rigorous than APUSH
Calculus is not AP??
The difficulty level depends upon the teacher as well as your own abilities. You’re better off asking students at your school. IME, both are pretty challenging. AP Lang, if it’s taught correctly, is a great course because it’s writing intensive. It will teach you how to be a better writer, which is not only a great life skill, but will be invaluable when writing essays for college apps.
Does your school have a period in which you can drop classes? If yes, I would take advantage of that and keep everything on your schedule just to give you more of an idea of what you can handle.
Ultimately, I think you should take both APUSH and AP Lang. I agree with skieurope on dropping AP Psych, especially because it won’t benefit you as much as APUSH and AP Lang would. Not only will they improve your writing skills, but taking both will also force you to become a more organized person. Those are skills everyone needs and can always improve on.
