I’m currently debating whether to take AP US history or AP seminar? I don’t have enough room in my schedule to take both and was hoping for some advice? The AP seminar teacher had an 100% passing rate on the AP test, while AP US history has a very high rate as well. I took the AP world history test last year, but did not pass. I’m also not sure what I would like to major in college. Peers have told me that AP seminar is mainly in-classwork, but AP US history has a lot of after school work. However, the AP US history teacher has been known to drastically improve students writing. On the other hand, the teacher for AP seminar is known as a very well AP seminar teacher is known as an amazing teacher. The AP seminar program has many benefits as well… Thank you for your help!
It all depends on what you’re interested in. Both courses sound great, though I’ve only ever heard of APUSH.
I will say that I failed the AP World History exam freshman year and passed the APUSH exam with a 5 two years later. APUSH was necessary for my current major, so I got credit for it. My writing skills improved tremendously that year because I took AP English Language and APUSH.
I guess my vote is for APUSH.
It sounds like you’d like AP seminar better but worry not picking apush will be detrimental in some way.is that correct?
I have taken both! If you are looking for college credit, APUSH will definitely give you more credits for doing well on the AP exam. AP seminar is also very interesting in that it is completely different from other courses. I would say that AP seminar had less outside work than APUSH, but it was a different type of thinking and connecting ideas (if that makes sense). Good luck! I hope this helped.
What year are you? Which class you take should depend on your goals.
In DD’s high school, AP Seminar is a writing and research based class usually taken by freshman to prepare them for truly challenging AP classes later on. Only a few take it because it’s strictly an elective, and many kids don’t want to use up a precious elective on a “preparatory” class. I think if the district would count it towards an English requirement the class would be packed, but it doesn’t (at least for DD -YMMV). APUSH is more difficult, involves two hours of homework a night, but it satisfies a social studies requirement and is more likely to give you college credit later.
Your school may have a different perspective on AP Seminar, so you should discuss it with your GC in light of your own academic standing and school’s graduation requirements.
I would only take AP Seminar if you will be taking AP Research to get the AP Capstone designation.
With that said, I feel the skill sets learned in these two classes are very valuable when you go to college and beyond even though it won’t necessarily help you that much in the admission process.
That’s true, but I also know the APUSH teacher and my past teachers told me to stay in his class because it will improve my writing skills.
AP seminar will also help with writing.
It’ll be a different sort of writing.
Will you be taking AP Lang?
What colleges are you targeting?
I took AP Seminar, and personally, I think APUSH was far more strenuous (but I got a four on the Seminar exam, and a five on APUSH). Before I answer for sure, there’s a few holes for you to fill. Here they come:
I know you’re undecided, but what are you interested in doing after college?
Are you interested in history? (Like, not as a student, but as a history nerd)
Are you good at presentations, and making an argument?
Are you good at taking notes from a textbook?
Are these classes really relevant to whatever you’re interested in?
How strenuous is the rest of your schedule?
If you answer these, I think I can give you a very definite answer.
